2nd Place Host - Aspen Interiors vs. On 2 St. Thomas Evergreen Centennials

About 2000 people filled the stands at Bob Van Impe Stadium for the feature game of the night. Trevor Ethier took to the circle for Aspen against Todd Martin for St. Thomas. Homeruns dominated the scoring early, as St. Thomas scored first on shots by Mark Coleman and Brian Roote sandwiched between a run scoring triple by Dale Levy. Dean Holoien hit in Daryl Joy with a single in 3rd inning for Aspen’s first run. In the next inning with the score 3-1 Pat Mackintosh put one over dead center to score Sean O’Brien and tie the game. Holoien replaced Ethier for the 6th as the pitching began to dominate. Even with great pitching the bottom of the 7th was not without drama.  Keith MacKintosh hit a lead off single, but pinch runner Graham Patola was caught at second on Sean O’Brien’s bunt leaving O’Brien on first. O’Brien advanced to second on a wild pitch to Dean Holoien. Holoien struck out bringing up Pat Mackintosh. At that point, the game was stopped for about 15 minutes on a protest by St. Thomas coach Dan Denniss. He argued that when O’Brien who had called time to ask his coach if there should be a two out runner for the catcher had actually used a second offensive conference of the inning. After the protest was decided, Aspen coach Jason Kurlyk was thrown out as O’Brien’s timeout was ruled the second of the inning and Preliminary Round All Star Pat MacKintosh came to the plate with a chance to win it.  However, Todd Martin finished off the inning by striking him out.

In the 8th inning neither team’s runners got past second, setting he stage for an exciting 9th.  Mark Coleman, who had struck out to end the previous inning, was placed on second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Holoien was in a jam, facing a runner on 3rd and none out. He seemed to put things into another gear as he proceeded to strike out Dale Levy, Brad Robinson and Dave Bailey to end the threat. The bottom of the inning started with Mike Lawton on second Geoff Evely bunted, but 3rd baseman Brian Roote could not get Lawton going to third. After another brief stoppage that frustrated Martin, he threw a wild pitch scoring Lawton from third for the Aspen victory. Saskatoon Aspen Interiors now advance to Sunday’s final against the winner of the game between St. Thomas and the winner of the 8:30 game featuring Newfoundland and Jarvis.
