Simcoe Rural Fastball League Finals
Game 1

The Vasey Countrymen played host to the Minesing Monarchs in Game 1 of the Simcoe Rural Fastball League Thursday night. Starting on the mound for the Countrymen was right-hander Jason Phillips, while toeing the rubber for Minesing was veteran left-hander Kurt Glover.

Vasey kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the first with 2 runs and plated 2 more runs in the bottom of the second inning to jump out to an early 4-0 lead.
Minesing responded in the 4th inning with a 4 spot of thier own courtesy of a Matt McLearn grand slam. Minesing would then take the lead in the top of the 5th as Rob Maclean blasted a 2-run homerun to left centre and  gave Minesing a 6-4 lead. Minesing would then pushed across another run in the top of the sixth off relief pitcher Brad Robinson.  A John McNabb single, followed by a pass ball and a Keith Rankin single gave Minesing a 7-4 lead.

Kurt Glover managed to keep the Countrymen batters off balance through the third, fourth and fifth innings but ran into trouble in the sixth. With two out and a runner on base, Steve Eakley belted a two-run homerun over the right field fence to bring Vasey back within one run.

Robinson held Minesing off the board in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh with two out and a runner on second, pinch hitter Jody King drove a 3-2 offering up the middle to plate the tying run and send the game into extra innings.

In the top of the 8th Minesing managed to put runners on the corners only to see veteran Rob Mclean to ground out for the final out of the inning.

With a solid crowd backing them up, the Countrymen put a runner on base with two out and capitalized once again as Steve Eakley hit the first pitch he saw over the centerfield fence for a dramatic come from behind victory. This was truly a great game for all fans in attendance.

The series will resume in one week time due to player conflicts.

The Countrymen wish to send out a special 91st Birthday wish to Marj Darby who was in attendance. Marj has been a steady supporter of the Countrymen over the last 15 years and loves to get out to the ball park to watch all of her boys play!
