The Niagara Snappers captured the 2008 GHFL title with a 1-0 nailbiter win over the Niagara Dawgs. With a game time temperature of 7 degrees and two of the leagues top pitchers on the mound, the game turned into a defensive battle.
Both teams were led by gutsy pitching performances, Jamie Simpson picked up the win going all 7 innings for the Snappers, allowing only 2 hits and striking out 9 along the way. Tom Berube toed the rubber for the Dawgs and was equal to Simpson in every inning but got stung by a solo homerun off the bat of Trevor Falk to account for the games only run. Berube struck out 11 and didn't walk a man in his 6 innings of work.
The Snappers have now won the GHFL playoff tournament 3 out of the past 4 years, with the team losing in 2007 to the Niagara Falls Fury in the finals.
Snapper Mike Bateman was named the GHFL Playoff MVP. In six games, Bateman knocked out 10 hits in 14 at bats for a.714 average, including three home runs, one triple, and two doubles and had an astounding 12 RBIs.
