JimBradford was truly the complete umpire.  He achieved his level V statusin both Fast Pitch and Slo-Pitch and constantly devoted his timeon developing techniques and implementing methods of improvement. Jim cared deeply for the game of softball as well as his fellow umpires andgained world-wide respect for his craft.

We have another umpire who is still active in our great sport of softballwho is finally being recognized for the same level of commitment and greatpassion.  Working on and off the field for the past thirty five years, this umpire has the fortitude to get back up and keep going when the goinggets tough.  Although this is not a new phrase, the umpire coined theterm on the field responding to an unruly coach: “Do I look new?”
Noreen Atkinson has been mentoring young umpires for years.  As anelite catcher in the game, she easily slid into the role of umpire. Noreenattended her first Canadians in the 80’s and received her Level V in PEI in2002.

To prepare for those Canadians, she attended theCanada Summer games the previous year.   It was the shout that washeard around Canadian ball parks everywhere!  Somewhere under thatbeautiful tree….we heard….”Oh my god!!!  Is that MY game going on overthere?”   There are times that hard lessons are learnt ……………and yes,Noreen fell asleep and missed her game…

Let’s talk about commitment!  Selection for the ISF Junior Women’sWorlds in the Netherlands is an amazing accomplishment.  Planescancelled…. transportation from airports missed…..but Noreenpersevered………booked her own flight………got on trains……..and managed to arrive ather foreign destination in time for the event.

Participating in Canadian Championships as both an umpire and supervisor,Noreen devotes a great deal of time to instruct and mentor all those aroundher.  Whether singing in the rain and coal mines in Nova Scotia, instructing at a clinic or umpiring a mite game, she is an umpire thatcontinually gives back to the game that she loves.

After all these achievements, Noreen is currently the Zone Umpire-in-Chiefof a very active zone.  Noreen inspires us all.  A single mother ofan university son, Noreen just recently graduated with her Masters ineducation.   We would all like to congratulate Noreen  as thefirst female recipient of the Jim Bradford Award.

Thank you for your hard work and dedication to our sport.

FP Zone Umpire-in-Chief of the Year*

AngieC_1.jpgOn behalf of Softball Ontario and the Fast PitchUmpires Committee, Softball Ontario is pleased to announce Angie Cerisanoas the Home Run Sports Zone Umpire-in-Chief of the Year, also known as theZUIC of the Year.  The Home Run Sports ZUIC of the Year is an annuallygiven to a Zone Umpire in Chief who has made outstanding contributions to theSoftball Ontario Fast Pitch Umpires Program and to their Fast Pitch UmpireZone.  Angie is no exception to this rule.

It was natural progression for Angie as he switched over to Softball Ontarioafter being a Baseball Umpire for many years.  Angie registered withSoftball Ontario in 2000 after seeing the light and realizing that Softball isby far a better game than Baseball.  Angie has strived to put northernOntario on the map by improving the Softball Ontario Umpires Program in hisregion.   Under Angie’s leadership, he ensures that Zone 11 hosts atleast one Umpire clinic a year which is a huge feat for his extremely largegeographical zone he looks after.  Angie is often known to put his ownneeds aside and gets great pleasure out of mentoring Umpires to improve theirgame.

In the last two years, the Softball Ontario Fast PitchUmpires Committee selected two (2) Umpires from Zone 11 to represent SoftballOntario at two different Canadian Championships.   Angie was veryinstrumental in preparing these Umpires to represent the Softball OntarioFast Pitch Umpires program well.  Under Angie’s strong direction,Zone 11 was able to tackle any requests for an On-Field Evaluation, ruleinterpretation questions or servicing many private tournaments.

During the off season, Angie was the mascot for the now defunct North BayCententials.  His nickname was “Casey Jones” and his costume looks justlike Angie except 100 pounds heavier, crooked nose and all.  Angie hasalso played “Nipper” the Police Dog for Crime Stoppers.  If you have everumpired with him, it is crime the way he howls in call his game!! Another stint that Angie did was play Polkaroo the Kangaroo (somewhat the wayhe covers the bases).

TheFast Pitch Umpires Committee would like to wish Angie well the 2009Bantam Girls Canadian Championship and are confident that he will have asuccessful tournament.

Congratulations on a job well done inZone 11 and the Fast Pitch Umpires program is thrilled that you are apart ofthe Best Blue Crew in Canada, the Softball Ontario Umpires Program.

Great job Angie!

AnUpdate from the Respect My Game Program
By Scott Williston,Respect My Game Project Manager
Respect_My_Game_1.jpgThe Respect My Game Committee in conjunction with both SoftballOntario Umpires Committees (FP and SP) hosted a great training weekend for allZone Staffs in Toronto, on February 14, 2009 at Softball Ontario’s newhome.

The Respect My Game Task Force of Scott Williston, Dick Coleman, MarkTrepanier, Scott Searle, Terry Hrynyk, Rob Phillips and Steph Sutton had thefloor all day Saturday to train the 60 Softball Ontario Umpire LearningFacilitators on the clinic materials to be introduced into all of all SoftballOntario educational programs.   Ken Uyesugi, Chairmanof Softball Ontario’s Participation and Murray Harvey from Softball Canada’sOfficials Development Committee was also in attendance to relay theinformation onto their respective Programs.

There were some verylively discussions, which is exactly what the Respect My Game Task Force waslooking for.   The participants of the training sessionwere provided a copy of the Respect My Game Manual which is meant to be anever-changing package as the game changes and the Respect returns to thegame.
The current package has had comments on the length of the document,it is not meant to be taught in its entirety to clinics.  All theresources that were utilize were put into one document so everyone can readafter attending a clinic. It was felt that we are aware of what the otherparticipants of the game are being asked to do we all understand each otherbetter, which will lead to more respect for each other and thegame.
This new material will be incoroparted into each clinic. Theinformation being presented is not new by any means.  Most of it wastaken from current umpire manuals and many other Respect programs that werealready in place in many other sports. This is first time for Softball Ontariohas put all the information in one place for ease of reference for allparticipants of the game.
This will be the seed that brings respect back to the game ofSoftball and increases participation in game that should be able to be playedwell into our golden years.

Please stay tuned for more details as we roll out the new Respect MyGame program!

Fast Pitch By TheRules
by PeterKluszczynski, Softball Ontario Fast Pitch Provincial Umpire-in-Chief
peterk020.jpgI would like to personally thank the Fast-PitchUmpires of Ontario for their continued support for our great Softball Ontarioprogram.  The registration season has begun and I would like to encourageeveryone to register and obtain a copy of this year’s exam.  YourFast Pitch Committee has worked very hard in creating a realistic registrationbudget for this season in order to eliminate the need to raise theregistration fees from last season’s cost.
The clinic season is rightaround the corner so browse the website to see what options are available toyou in order to stay current with rule changes and update or retain yourcurrent certification levels.  At each of our clinics, two of ourexperienced and innovative instructors will help explain new mechanics andpositioning, or you may want to just take the opportunity to match up with oldacquaintances and fellow umpires to get ready for another greatseason.
I am extremely pleased withthe progress that we have made in clarifying the issue regarding umpires andinsurance.  Your Fast Pitch Committee has worked tirelessly to get theagreement of all Member Associations (OASA, PWSA, ORSA and SPOA) that theSoftball Ontario Umpire Program is the sole entity approved and responsiblefor providing insurance to the umpires of Ontario.  Our job continues inorder to properly educate all Minor Ball Associations and umpires about thetrue benefits of our program.  There are still officials who take a hugechance when officiating a game without proper insurancecoverage on the diamond.  We have all heard the horror stories of umpireswho suffer severe financial penalty when they are not covered for unfortunateincidents that occur during a game that they are officiating.  Talk toall of your fellow officials to make sure that they are properly registeredwith our program to receive all of the great benefits and peace of mind thatour Accident and Liability Insurance affords.  For those officials whohave never registered with our great program, or who wish to return after aperiod of inactivity there are other registration options that will suit theirparticular needs.
I am sure that many of yourealize that our Province has been awarded seven (7) Canadian Championships bySoftball Canada.  This year I have assured our National Director ofUmpires, Brian Van Os, that Softball Ontario will be well represented at eachand every one of these championships.  You will see many of the bestumpires in the Province at these Canadian Championships and also at all of theelite Provincial Member Associations events, working and honing their skillsin preparation for their “event of a lifetime”.
I want everyone to realizethat Softball Ontario is the Provincial Body that was created to act as avoice for all of us who are associated with our great sport – players, coaches, teams, leagues, Associations and yes – even the Umpires!!  WEare Softball Ontario and WE are the membership that effects change to policyand the way that things are run for the betterment of all aspects of the sportof Softball in Ontario.
My motto is“SOLIDARITY”.  With your continued support and membership, we willcontinue to make improvements to the best Umpire Program in Canada, in orderto develop the best Umpires in the Country!!
