Cardinals and Hounds win openers

                                            CARDINALS AND  HOUNDS WIN OPENERS
 
 
                                                               The 20th season of fastball for the Rick McDonald Memorial Fastball League got underway Monday night , May 25th with a doubleheader in Azilda at the Rick McDonald Memorial Park.
                                                                In the opener ,the Garson Hounds took on the Sudbury Athletics . It was a tight defensive match for the first few innings as the Hounds led  2-1 after three innings of play . The Athletics broke it open in the bottom of the fourth with four runs to take over the lead 5-2 but the Hounds returned the favor in the  fifth scoring five themselves and held on for a 7-6 victory. Gary Lamothe(1-0) went all the way for Hounds striking out 8 betters , giving up 12 hits and no walks. Pat Brennan Sr(0-1)  suffered the loss  fanning 9 batters , giving up 14 hits and issuing 0 base on balls. Gary Lamothe went 3 for 3 at the plate for the Hounds while Bruce McDonald hit 2 for 3 (one double) in a losing cause for the Athletics ..
                                                                 In the nightcap , two old rivals  the Pickerel River Cardinals and the Dog House North Stars , faced each other to open the season  . Once again this was a close defensive match for the first three innings but then the Cardinals broke it open in the final frames to win it going away 10-5 . Jonathan Contin (1-0) went all the way for Pickerel River striking out  14 North Stars , giving up 9 hits and 0 walks. Dan Nootchtai(0-1) went all the way for Dog House  ,giving up 13 hits and issuing one base on balls. Alex Ashawasagai from the Cardinals led all hitters going 4 for 5  with one 3 run homer  while Ben Bast hit 2 for 4 (double,triple) in a losing cause for the North Stars.
                                                                 Play resumes on Thursday night May  28th at the Lorn Brady Park in Garson with a doubleheader starting at 7 pm when the Hounds from Garson take on the Dog House North Stars which will be followed by the Pickerel River Cardinals against the Sudbury Athletics under the lights. The Parry Island  Bears  the newest member of the league will begin play next week.
