Five Ontario Nominees will be Inducted to SoftballCanada Hall of Fame
(Ottawa, ON) - Softball Canada is pleased to announce thatPhyllis Bomberry (Athlete), Don Bracey (Official), Gil Read (Builder), the 1949Tip Top Tailors (Team) and Darren Zack (Athlete) will be inducted into theSoftball Canada Hall of Fame in recognition for their contribution andexcellence in the sport of softball across the country.
Phyllis Bomberry (Athlete – Ontario),born in 1943 in Oshweken, Ontario, grew upplaying softball in a time when there were no Canadian Championships, and oncethey were created, it was very difficult for women’s teams to qualify. Phyllisplayed in several world-class tournaments, most notably the Bulova WatchTournament at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto where she had three(3) first-place finishes and two (2) second-place finishes. From 1967 to 1970,Phyllis was by far one of the best players in the country. In 1967, she won aCanadian Championship and was named All-Star Catcher, also collecting TopBatter and Most Valuable Player awards. The following year, she won her secondstraight Canadian Championship and once again was named All-Star catcher. In1969, Phyllis became the first woman to win the Tom Longboat award (created in1951) annually awarded to the most outstanding First Nations athlete. That sameyear, she won a Gold medal at the first Canada Games.
Don Bracey (Official – Ontario),an official from Oshawa, Ontario, has mademany contributions to the sport of softball in addition to his many years ofofficiating. His umpiring career began in 1980 and he quickly made an impact atthe local, provincial and national level, umpiring at numerous Provincial andNational Championships. He was granted Level V status in 1989 at the CanadianSenior Men’s Championships. At the International level, he worked the 1992(where he worked the plate during the Gold medal game) and 2004 ISF Women’sWorld Championships. In addition to his hard work on the field, Don was alsovery involved in the administration side of officiating, serving as a member ofthe Officiating Development Committee ODC and working as Umpire in Chief atvarious Canadian Championships. He mentored many officials as a MasterInstructor and Evaluator, and his greatest impact on the Softball Canada UmpireProgram was when he created and maintained the Softball Canada Umpire CaseBook.
Gil Read (Builder – Ontario), a long-time coach from the Ottawa region, led threeteams to the Canadian Championships in 1993, 1995 and 1999 and also coachedTeam Ontario to Gold medals at the 1997, 2001 and 2005 Canada Summer Games. Gilwas a member of Softball Ontario’s Coaching Committee from 1995 to 2002, alsoserved on Softball Canada’s Coaching Committee and was a Softball Canada MasterCourse Conductor from 1994 to 2006. In addition to all his contributions to thecoaching community, Gil also served as a member of Softball Canada’s InitiationCommittee, and was Canada’s Team Leader at the 2003 ISF Junior Women’s WorldChampionship, at the 2003 Women’s Olympic Team Qualifier and at the 2004Olympic Games in Athens. Gil suddenly passed away in 2007.
The1949 Tip Top Tailors (Team – Ontario)are the only Canadian team ever towin an ASA Championship, which at the time was considered the World SoftballChampionship for Men’s Fastpitch. 2009 marks the 60th anniversary ofthe Championship win, and four members are still alive (Ray Pulfer, Bill “Babe”Gresko, Pat McCullagh, and Len Gaull). In the late 40’s and early 50’s,softball would attract thousands of fans in the Toronto area.
Darren Zack (Athlete – Ontario), born in Garden River, Ontario in 1960,was the top pitcher in Canadian Fastpitch from 1992 to 2002. He is a great ambassador of the game, and is treated as a legend whenever he appears at a Canadianball park, a certain sign of the respect that he has earned in the softball community. Zack has participated in numerous Canadian Championships, winning Gold medals in 1993, 1995 and 1996 and a Silver medal in 1992. His National awards include Top Pitcher in 1992, Top Player in the Championship Round in1993, All-Star Pitcher and Top Player of the Championship Round in 1995, and Most Valuable Player and Top Pitcher of the Qualifying Round in 1996. Darrenalso represented Canada at numerous International events from 1991 to 2004,winning a Gold medal at the 1992 ISF World Championship, a Silver medal at the1996 ISF World Championship, and three Gold medals at the Pan American Games(1991, 1995 and 1999).
These five inductees will join the select group of Canadians who have had this honour bestowed upon them at the Induction ceremonywhich will be held Saturday, November 14th, 2009. The ceremony isheld in conjunction with Softball Canada’s Annual Meeting in Ottawa, Ontario,which will take place from November 12-14.

Cinq candidats de l’Ontario se joigneront au Temple dela renommée de Softball Canada
(Ottawa, ON) – Softball Canada est content d’annoncerque Phyllis Bomberry (Athlète), Don Bracey (Officiel), Gil Read (Bâtisseur),les Tip Top Tailors de 1949 (Équipe) et Darren Zack (Athlète) seront intronisésau Temple de la renommée de Softball Canada en reconnaissance de leurcontribution et excellence au sport du softball à travers le pays.
Phyllis Bomberry (Athlète – Ontario), née en 1943 àOshweken, en Ontario, a grandi en jouant au softball dans un temps lorsqu’iln’y avait pas de Championnats Canadiens, et une fois qu’ils ont été créés, ilétait très difficile pour des équipes féminines a s’y qualifier. Phyllis a jouédans plusieurs tournois de calibre international, notamment le tournoi BulovaWatch à l’Exhibition Nationale Canadienne à Toronto où elle a été couronnéechampionne à trois reprises et a fini deuxième à deux reprises. De 1967 à 1970,Phyllis était de loin l’une des meilleures joueuses au Canada. En 1967, elle agagné un Championnat Canadien et a été nommée receveuse Étoile, récoltant aussiles honneurs de Meilleure frappeuse et Joueuse la plus utile. L’année suivante,elle a gagné son deuxième Championnat Canadien consécutif et a encore une foisété nommée Étoile comme receveuse. En 1969, Phyllis est devenue la premièrefemme à gagner le prix Tom Longboat (créé en 1951), remis annuellement à le (oula) meilleur(e) athlète des Premières nations. Cette même année, elle aremporté une médaille d’or aux premiers Jeux du Canada.
Don Bracey (Officiel – Ontario), un officiel d’Oshawa,en Ontario, a apporté plusieurs contributions au sport du softball en plus deses plusieurs années d’arbitrage. Sa carrière d’arbitre a commencé en 1980 etil a rapidement eu un impact au niveau local, provincial et national, arbitrantà plusieurs Championnats provinciaux et Canadiens. Il s’est mérité son statutde Niveau V en 1989 au Championnat Canadien senior masculin. Au niveauinternational, il a travaillé les Championnats du monde féminin de l’ISF en1992 (où il a travaillé le marbre dans la grande finale) et en 2004. En plus deson excellent travail sur le terrain, Don était aussi très impliqué dans le domainede l’administration des officiels, servant comme membre du Comité deDéveloppement des Officiels (CDO) et travaillant comme Arbitre en Chef (AEC) àplusieurs Championnats Canadiens. Il a servi comme mentor à plusieurs officielscomme Instructeur et Évaluateur Maître, et son plus grand impact sur leprogramme des Arbitres de Softball Canada était lorsqu’il a créé et maintenu lelivre de cas des arbitres de Softball Canada.
Gil Read (Bâtisseur – Ontario), un entraîneur de larégion d’Ottawa, a mené trois équipes aux Championnats Canadiens en 1993, 1995et en 1999 et a aussi servi comme entraîneur de l’équipe de l’Ontario qui agagné des médailles d’Or aux Jeux du Canada d’été en 1997, 2001 et en 2005. Gilétait membre du Comité des entraîneurs de Softball Ontario de 1995 à 2002, aaussi servi sur le Comité des entraîneurs de Softball Canada et était unInstructeur Maître de Cours d’entraîneur de Softball Canada de 1994 à 2006. Enplus de toutes ses contributions à la communauté des entraîneurs, Gil a aussiservi comme membre du Comité d’initiation de Softball Canada, et était Meneurd’équipe au Championnat du monde junior féminin de l’ISF en 2003, auQualificateur Olympique senior féminin de 2003 et aux Jeux Olympiques de 2004 àAthènes. Gil a soudainement perdu sa vie en 2007.
Les Tip Top Tailors de 1949 (Équipe – Ontario) sont laseule équipe canadienne qui a jamais gagné le Championnat de l’ASA, qui dans cetemps était reconnu comme le Championnat Mondial de Softball pour laBalle-Rapide masculine. 2009 marque le 60e anniversaire duchampionnat, et quatre membres sont toujours en vie (Ray Pulfer, Bill« Babe » Gresko, Pat McCullagh et Len Gaull). Dans la fin des années40s et le début des années 50s, le softball attrayait des milliers de gens dansla région de Toronto.
Darren Zack (Athlète – Ontario), né à Garden River, enOntario en 1960, était le meilleur lanceur en Balle-Rapide canadienne de 1992jusqu’en 2002. Il est un excellent ambassadeur du sport, et est traité comme unelégende à tous les fois qu’il se présente à un terrain de balle au Canada, unsigne du respect qu’il a mérité dans la communauté de softball. Zack aparticipé dans plusieurs Championnats Canadiens, remportant des médailles d’Oren 1993, 1995 et en 1996 et une d’argent en 1992. Ses prix nationaux incluentMeilleur lanceur en 1992, Meilleur joueur en ronde éliminatoire en 1993,Lanceur « toile et Meilleur joueur de la ronde éliminatoire en 1995, etJoueur le plus utile et Meilleur lanceur de la ronde préliminaire en 1996.Darren a aussi représenté le Canada à plusieurs Championnats internationaux de1991 jusqu’en 2004, gagnant une médaille d’Or au Championnat du monde masculinde l’ISF en 1992, une médaille d’argent à celui de 1996, et trois médailles d’Oraux Jeux Panaméricains (1991, 1995, et 1999).
Les cinq candidats s’ajouteront au groupe exclusif decanadien(ne)s qui ont reçu cet honneur avant eux lors de la cérémonied’intronisation qui aura lieu le samedi 14 novembre, 2009. La cérémonie seratenue en conjonction avec l’Assemblée Générale Annuelle de Softball Canada àOttawa, en Ontario du 12 au 14 novembre.
