JB RED SOXS  WIN 10TH ANNUAL RICK McDONALD MEMORIAL FASTBALL TOURNAMENT

After an absence of one year due to the accidental death of Dan McDonald(the main organizer) Rick's brother the tournament returned this year . The tournament has both a slo pitch and fastball element but I will stick to fastball for this web site .Before I get into the facts and results of the tournament I had a chance to sit down with Rick's widow  Corinne Fewster and Dan's fiance Sandra Rayner . This is what both fine ladies had to say ."Its hard to believe its been ten years since the ontimely death of Rick who was killed in the line of action. We wanted to keep Rick's memory alive and therefor created this tournament for the big guy who was an excellent fastball player himself . Several law enforcement units come out each year to play co-ed slo pitch and the members of the fastball league of which Rick was a member put on a fastball tournament . Some of the proceeds  through the years have gone  to beautify the park that carries his name as well as the purchace of bicycles for thge less fortunate children f our community .It also serves to help several organizations with chilkdren initiatives .One such initiative was to help a sick boy by which the  $2500 raised was able to send him and his family of four to Disneyland. We hope this weekend will keep on going for years to come.
In fastball some nine teams participated and when round robbin games were completed the top four seeds advanced to semi final action (check attachement for final round robbin , seeding placement and top hitters as well as all the scores from the first 14 games completed by Saturday evening) ..
In semi final action Sunday morning both lower seed teams came up with big victories .In semi final one the JB Red Soxs(#3 seed) got the better  Garson Hounds  (#2 seed)  8 to 1 . In semi final two the Sagamok Rez`Riders(#4 seed) upset and dumped Magnatewan Native Sons (#1 seed) 13 to 5 ..
This set the stage for an exciting championship final later that afternoon. The game turned into a pitcher's battle as well as a defensive  one for the first three frames with the sciore knotted at 1to 1 .  The Red Soxs broke it open scoring 4 runs in the middle innings getting to Rez Riders' pitcher Eric Abitong .  JB seem well on their  way until the young Rez Riders  scored three runs in the fifth and sixth inning to make it a one run ball gfame at 5-4 for the Red Soxs .In the bottom of the sixth inning the JB's scored two crucial runs on four hits to take a 7-4 lead .The Sagamok boys were not able to answer in the top of the seventh and therefor giving the Red Soxs the championship. Jordy "Seed" Dalhvik went all the way for his fourth victory of the weekend combined with one tie on Friday evening. Dalhvik gave up 9 hits ,issued two base on balls and fanned 6 batters . His opponent Eric "E-man" Abitong also went the distance giving up 10 hits ,issuing one base on balls and striking out 7 batters. Joel Belanger going 2 for 4 (double) and 12 for 15 with five round trippers, four doubles ,two triples and 9 runs batted in was without a doubt the tournament MVP . Other members of the championship team were : Pitou Paquette , Cummy Burton ,Todd Vaillancourt , Marc Bertrand ,George Burton , Marc McCue ,Steve Sabourin ,Ernie Watt ,Brett demers ,Chris Rocque and Denis Castonguay . BJ Naskasha hit 2 for 4 in a losing cause for the Rez Riders.
Don't forget that league action resumes in the Rick McDonald Memorial Fastball League this evening in Azilda with the 1-2 Dog House Noreth Stars taking on the 2-1 Pickerel River Cardinals at 7 PM followed by the winless 0-3 Athletics facing the 2-1 Parry Island Hawks under the lights at 9 PM ..
