June 19, 2009

Fingal, ON

"Team Canada opened up its Ontario exhibition tour Thursday night in Fingal,
Ontario by sweeping both ends of a doubleheader from the St. Thomas
Evergreen Centennials.
The opener saw the visiting National Team scratch out
a 2-0 victory while a seven-run second inning was the highlight of a 12-1
decision in Game Two.

Game 1

Ian Fehrman's (Townsend, ON) second inning homerun opened the scoring and it
was completed in the fifth when first baseman Derek Mayson (North Vancouver,
BC) led off with a single, was bunted to second by Dale Levy (St. Mary's,
ON) and scored on a single by catcher Craig Crawford (Markham, ON).

Trevor Ethier (Saskatoon, SK) picked up the win in the pitcher's circle,
hurling four innings of no hit ball, striking out four in the process. Nick
Underhill (Campbell River, BC) threw the last three innings, allowing two
hits and striking out five. Rob Schweyer pitched the game for St. Thomas,
allowing only two runs, striking out seven and walking one.

Game 2

Centrefielder Ryan Wolfe (Melbourne, ON) set the tone for the visiting squad
when he hit the first pitch from St. Thomas starter Scott Wagar over the
left field fence to give Team Canada a quick 1-0 lead. They would add seven
more in the second, three in the third and one more in the fourth on route
to a 12-1 win. The game saw eight of the Canadian starters hit safely at
least once.

Leading the 14-hit attack were Kevin Schellenberg (Squamish, BC) with a home
run and two singles, Colin Abbott (Portugal Cove, NL) who reached base
safely all four times (three singles and catcher's obstruction), Ian Fehrman
(Townsend, ON) with a single as well as his second home run of the evening,
driving in three in total and catcher Sean O'Brien (Brockville, ON) with a
three run blast. Wolfe would also add a second home run to lead off the
fourth inning.

Todd Martin (Bracebridge, ON) started the game on the mound, allowing one
hit and one unearned run, striking out eight in three innings of work. Dean
Holoien (Melfort, SK) finished by striking out four and walking one while
not allowing a hit over the final two frames.

Team Canada will play doubleheaders tonight (June 19) in Jarvis, Ontario
against the Jarvis Gamblers starting at 6:30pm, tomorrow (June 20) in Fingal
against the Ontario All-Stars starting at 6:30pm, and Sunday in Jarvis

The Canadian Senior Men’s National team kicked off their Ontario tour leading up to the ISF World Championships last night as they played a double header versus the St. Thomas Evergreen Centennials in Fingal, Ontario.

The first game saw Team Canada come out on top of a hard fought battle 2-0. In the night cap of the twin bill Team Canada flexed their muscle hitting 5 homeruns including a solo shot by Ryan Wolfe on the first pitch of the game on their way to a 12-1 win over the local club. Also going yard were Sean O’Brien(3 run shot) in the second, Wolfe with his second solo shot of the game to lead off the 3rd inning, Ian Fehrman (2 run shot) in the 3rd and Kevin Schellenburg with a solo shot in 4th. Team Canada’s scoring was rounded out with Derek Mayson contributing a RBI single, Fehrman with a RBI single and Dale Levy with a 2 run single.

St. Thomas scored their run in the 3rd inning when Troy Rick led off the inning with a strikeout but was safe at first on a passed ball third strike, stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Team Canada catcher and came around to score as that throw skipped under the centerfielders glove.

Todd Martin and Dean Holoien combined to strike out 12 St. Thomas batters and only allowed one hit, a double to Tex Lessard in the 3rd inning. Scott Wagar with the loss, Rob Schweyer and Brad Robinson handled the pitching chores for the Evergreen Centennials.

All in all it was a great night at the ball park with the weather co-operating and a fairly large crowd. Team Canada moves on to Jarvis tonight to take on the Jarvis Gamblers in another doubleheader before returning to Fingal Saturday night to take on the Ontario All-Stars.
