Athletics do well in North Bay

                                                           THE HAWKS WIN , ATHLETICS DO WELL IN NORTH BAY
 
                                                  Two games were played in the Rick McDonald Memorial Fastball League on Monday night in Azilda . In the opener , the Dog House Sportsbar(3-4-0) found themselves playing with only 8 players giving the first place Pickerel River Cardinals (6-1-0)  bigger chances to hit the holes in the outfield. Only 6 North Stars were able to reach base and it was only in the bottom of the seventh that they were able to score their only two runs in a 6-2 loss to the Cardinals. Jonathan Contin went the distance on the mound to collect his sixth victory against only one defeat.Contin gave up but six hits , issued one base on balls and fanned four batters. Troy Nootchtai (0-3) also went the distance for the North Stars giving up 12 hits , issuing 0 base on balls and striking out 3 batters. League leading hitter Curt Hambly led his Cardinal charges with a 3 for 4 performance at the plate  with teammate Jeff Ashawasagai hitting 2 for 2  while Pitou Paquette and Junior Ilnitski hit 1 for 3 in a losing cause for Dog House .
                                                    In the nightcap under the lights , the Parry Island Hawks(5-3-0) returned to the win column with a  7-3 victory over the last place Athletics (0-6-1) . Percy Tobobundung (1-0) started for the Hawks and picked up his first win of the season in giving up 5 hits , not issuing a single walk and fanned two batters . Percy gave way to Al Guenette in the 6th inning .Al gave up two hits and struck out four batters. Veteran Pat Sr Brennan went the distance for the Athletics and was tagged with the loss , his fifth of the present campaign. Percy Tobobundung and Frank  "Bonkers" Pagahamagabow  led the Hawks with 2 for 3 performances at the bat while Eric Legendre and Donat Carriere (double) hit 1 for 3 in losing cause for the Athletics.
                                                  Play resumes Thursday night  July 2nd in Garson at the Lorne Brady Memorial Park when the winless Athletics take on the first Pickerel River Cardinals at 7 PM followed by the Parry Island Hawks against the Garson Hounds at 9PM .
                                                  Last weekend in North Bay , the Athletics took part in a 35 and over fastball tournament . It was the 29th annual Silverfox tournament . The Athletics made a very good account of themselves going undefeated in the round robbin section with victories over Mattawa 4-1 (Eric Ace hit a three run homer) , 12-4 over North Bay Don Cherry's  and 6-2 over Callender's City Limits (Jason Green hit a solo home run ). Come Sunday morning they lost a heartbreaker 5-4 to North Bay's Boston Pizza (Jim Pawis and Jason Green both cracked back to back solo round trippers) . The Athletics placed 3rd out of twelve competing teams .. Pat Sr Brennan pitched all four games for the Athletics averaging 8,75 strike outs per game. Following are the remaining members of the 3rd place team : Pat Jr Brennan ,Ed Brennan , Greg Gilberts , J.P. Miron  and Matt Tobobundung ..
