Australiadefeats Canada on Day 5 of the Canada Cup
 
(Surrey,BC) – Australia scored all four of its runs in the top of the sixth inning asthey defeated the Canadian Senior Women’s National Softball Team by a score of4-2 in round-robin play of the 16th Annual Canada Cup tournament.Canada had defeated Australia 5-2 earlier in the tournament, but that one badinning cost them the game this time. Despite the loss, Canada still sits insecond place with a 4-3 record.
 
Aswas the case in the last few games, Canada got on the board early, scoring arun in the bottom of the first inning after Victoria Hayward(Mountain View, California) and Jennifer Salling (PortCoquitlam, BC) hits back-to-back singles, and Jennifer Yee (NorthDelta, BC) was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out. Kaleigh Rafter (Guelph,ON) then hit a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in the run.
 
Canadawas able to get runners on base in each of the three following innings, but wasunable to push any of them in to score. In the top of the sixth, Australianhitter Brenda de Blaes reached on an error, Stacey Porter singled, and TraceyMosley was hit by a pitch to load up the bases for the Aussies. Clare Warwickand Chelsea Forkin each delivered two-run singles to give Australia the 4-1lead.
 
Canadatrimmed the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh, but that was as close asthey would get. CharlotteDolan (Coquitlam, BC) walked and later scored on a double by Jennifer Yee.
 
Danielle Lawrie (Langley,BC) pitched the complete-game loss for Canada, as she allowed three earned runson six hits and four walks, striking out seven batters. At the plate, JenniferSalling and Erin Cumpstone(Saskatoon, SK) each collected a pair of hits, while Hayward, Yee and Raftereach chipped in with one. Caitlin Lever also earned a stolen base.
 
Canada(4-3) will take on the United States (7-0) as the two top teams of theInternational division will square off at 6:30pm PDT.
 
Inother scores on Day 5 of the Canada Cup, the Netherlands defeated Venezuela4-2, while the United States powered past the Netherlands 8-0 and Venezuela bya 10-0 score. USA has only allowed one run in seven games.
