Rick McDonald Memorial Fastball League

July 10, 2009

Sudbury, ON

                                                                             A SEASON OF SURPRISES!

As the first half of the Rick McDonald Memorial Fastball League comes to an end I'm taking a few minutes to reflect on what has happened . What jumps up immediately is that the defending league champions and winners in three of the last four seasons Dog House Sportsbar North Stars find themselves in last place . They've had to depend on sophomore Troy Nootchtai for most of their pitching with veteran Jordy "Swede" Dalhvik only able to come out twice .. Their bats have been silent for most of the season with the exception of Mike Cain who is hitting 400.
The Pickerel River Cardinals started off strong right out of the gate with a quick 5-1-0 record but since then have dropped off committing key fielding errors and their bats going cold . They've dropped three straight games and now sit in second spot with a record of 6-4-0 . The good thing in their favor is that Jonthan Contin is still pitching strong with a league leading 3,98 ERA while their catcher Curtuis Hambley leads the league in hitting at 727.
The veteran Garson Hounds always counted on to give their opponents stiff competition are in the middle of a slump. They started strong at 3-0-0 but since then have gone 0-3-1 for a third place tie. The bright lights infielder Robbie Edwards leading the league in round trippers with 4 and catcher Todd Parsons (3 home runs) continue to hit well. The rest of the team will have to pick it up.
The Sudbury Athletics couldn't buy a win if they wanted to in the first six weeks of the season stuck at 0-5-0 but since then have gone undefeated at 3-0-1 good for 7 points and a tie for third place. Two of those wins have come at the expense of the previously first place Cardinals. Veteran  pitcher Pat Sr Brennan has been at his best of late averaging at least 8 strike outs per game and giving up but 6 or 7 hits per game also. There is winning mood among all the players ever since they returned from the Silverfox Fastball Tournament in North Bay a couple of weeks ago where they placed third out of twelve teams.
Finally the biggest surprise of the season has been the newest member of the family , the Parry Island Hawks who are on a three game winning streak and have won 7 of their 10 regular season games for 14 points and sole posession of first place at the brake.Veteran pitchers Al Guenette , Percy Tobobundung and sophomore Matt Tobobundung  have been a pillar of strenght combined with the timely hitting , fielding and running of their young guns. When counted on clutch player Jason Green comes up with timely hits and runs batted in( he leads the league with 18) to help the cause.
It should be an exciting second half with top teams fighting for first place and the Commissioner's cup giving them an automatic bye to the second round semi finals.
