Canada beats Japan to win Bronze medal at KFC World Cup of Softball
 
(OklahomaCity, OK) – The Canadian Senior Women’s National Team pounded out 10 hits andtook advantage of an excellent outing by starting pitcher Danielle Lawrie(Langley, BC) to beat Japan in the Bronze medal game of the KFC World Cup ofSoftball 4. The final score of the game was 4-1 for Canada, while the UnitedStates took the Gold medal with a 3-1 win over Australia.
 
Inthe Bronze medal game, Canada opened the scoring in the bottom of the thirdinning, as Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, California) singled with two outsand crossed the plate on a triple by Jennifer Salling (Port Coquitlam, BC).Salling then scored on an interference call, which was followed by a solohomerun by Jennifer Yee (North Delta, BC), who cracked her third homerun of thetournament to give Canada a 3-0 lead.
 
Japanscored a run in the top of the fourth, but Canada regained its three run leadin the sixth when Evelyne Pare (Ile-Perrot, QC) and Caitlin Lever (Buffalo, NewYork) both singled, and Pare later scored on a single by Victoria Hayward.
 
Afterbattling a leg injury throughout the tournament, Danielle Lawrie turned in avery solid performance, pitching all seven innings to lead Canada to victory.She allowed one run on only four hits, and struck out five Japanese batters.
 
Atthe plate, Victoria Hayward, Jennifer Salling (double and triple) and EvelynePare all had a pair of hits for Canada, while Jennifer Yee, Erin Cumpstone(Saskatoon, SK), Megan Timpf (Port Dover, ON) and Caitlin Lever all had one.

Afterbeing on the road for nearly a month, the Canadian players will have a week offbefore flying to Venezuela, where they will compete in the 22-team Pan AmericanChampionship from July 31st to august 9th. The tournamentwill serve as the Pan American region qualifier for the 2010 ISF Women’s WorldChampionship.
