REGULAR SEASON ENDS IN RICK McDONALD FASTBALL

The regular season ended Thursday night in the Rick McDonald Memorial Fastball League out in Garson at the Lorne Brady Memorial Park . Just prior to the opnening game , a  special memorial ceremony was held in memory of Rick Mcdonald on the tenth anniversary of his tragic death while in the line of duty back on July 28th , 1999 . A few words were said followed by a silent moment and the song Amazing Grace played on bagpipes by officer Carrie MacDonald.
In game one , behind the fine pitching of veteran Jordy "Swede" Dalhvick(4-0) , the Dog House North Stars dumped the Sudbury Athletics 7 to 1. In picking up his fourth victory of the`season .Dalhvick  gave up three hits ,issued one base on balls and struck out  ten batters .John Ainsley(0-4) went the distance for the Athletics  and was tagged with his fourth loss on  6 hits , one base on balls and 3 strike outs.Mark Cain led the way for the North Stars going 2 for 3 (home run, triple) and four runs batted in with teammate Pitou Paquette hitting 1 for 2 a solo shot to right field , his fourth of the season while Jimmy Thompson hit 1 for 2 , a double , in a losing cause for the Athletics .
In the nightcap , the Garson Hounds took a large lead in the middle innings but then were hard pressed to hold on to a 9-8 victory over the Pickerel River Cardinals and sole posession of second place.Paul Lizotte(1-0) in his first outing of the season pitched the first four innings to pick up his first victory and gave way to Gary "Guinou" Lamothe (6-5) in the fifth frame. Both Gary and Paul combined to give up 14 hits  and strike out five batters .Catcher Todd Parson led the Hounds players with a 2 for 3 performance at bat including his league leading 5th round tripper with teammate Don Bidal hitting 2 for 3 (both singles) while Kurt Hambly(the league leading hitter) hit 2 for 4 (both  triples/takes over the league lead with 4) in a losing cause for the Cardinals.
There are now 7 rain out games to be made up but two of them will be single games for four point affairs. Its the Civic Holiday Monday on August the 3rd and therefore league play doesn't resume until Thursday August the 6th in Garson at the Lorne Brady Memorial Park with the first two rain outs.At 7 PM , the Athletics face the Dog House Sportbar North Stars followed by the nightcap under the lights set for 9 PM with the Pickerel River Cardinals taking on the 1st place Parry Island Hawks. A win or a tie for the Hawks will clinch first place and the Commissioner's Cup . That gives them a bye straight to ther second round semi finals.

Enjoy your Civic Holiday Weekend! See you on the ball fields!

                                                                                    Yours in fastball ,
