Canadian Senior Women’s Fast Pitch Championships

KITCHENER - Nine teams from five provinces will battle it out for five days with the winner being crowned the best in Canada.
 
It’s the Canadian Senior Women’s Fast Pitch Championships which will be played August 12 to 16 at Kitchener’s Peter Hallman Ball Yard.
 
The host team is the K-W Krush, It marks the sixth year in a row that they have qualified for the event.
 
While the host team is automatically seeded in the championships, the Krush enter the event as provincial champions. They won the title in the Ontario playdowns held last month in Port Perry. It marked the third year in a row that the Krush emerged victorious.
 
In their five national appearances to date, the Krush have won a gold medal, one silver and two bronze. They captured the 2006 championship held in Quebec. Last year the
K-W team placed fourth.
 
The 2008 championship game was an all-Winnipeg battle between the Smitty’s No.1 and Smitty’s No.2  teams doing battle with the No.2 team emerging victorious.
 
The defending champs are back this year and hoping to make it two in a row. The other teams are the Calahoo Xtreme of Edmonton, Calgary Ice, Saskatoon DBJ Leasing, Quebec Rebelles and three other Ontario teams – Port Perry Angels, Orleans Rebels and Whitby Eagles.
 
Play in this year’s championship starts Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the defending champions meeting the Calgary Ice on the main diamond at the Ball Yard. At noon hour, on diamond two, the Krush will face Port Perry.
 
Official opening ceremonies are scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday followed by the Krush playing Quebec at 8 p.m.
 
The format has the teams playing a round-robin schedule. It will be followed by knockout play with the top four teams having double life and the bottom four, single life.
 
Prior to the start of the tournament, teams, their parents plus tournament officials, will gather for a dinner. It will be held Tuesday night (Aug.11) at the Kitchener Knights of Columbus Hall.
 
A tournament pass costs $35 for adults and $25 for seniors and students. Daily admission is $8 for adults and $6 for seniors and students.
