Results from the NAFA 23U World Series

August 12, 2009

Sioux Falls, SD

Results from the NAFA 23 & Under Men’s Fast Pitch tournament in Sioux Fall, SD. Teams played two games in a round robin format to seed them in to the double elimination bracket.

The Hartford Explosion of South Dakota marched through the tournament with a perfect 6-0 record and defeated defending champions the Young Bucks of California twice on Sunday. In the Championship game the Explosion sent local BJ Hunhoff into the circle against Bryant Hale of the Young Bucks.

The Young Bucks took a 2-0 lead into the 3rd when the Explosion exploded with six hits in a row including back-to-back-to-back home runs by Justin Block, Mitch Warne and Jake Espland with Sean Korhes coming after the second home run for the Young Bucks. For good measure BJ Hunhoff also added a home run in the inning to take a 6-2 lead.

The Young Bucks cut the lead to one scoring three runs in the 4th with a bases loaded double by Marcus Tan and then tied the score in the 5th scoring another run. However the Explosion came back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and four more in the sixth to take a 12-6 lead. Kevin Castillo came in for relief of Lamar Goss in the final 1 2/3 innings. The Young Bucks added another run in the top of the seventh to end the game 12-7.

This was the best NAFA 23 & Under World Series to date with almost all teams fully staffed and not needing many of the other young men who were looking to play in the tournament. After polling the teams at the end of the tournament most will still be eligible for next year’s event. While all the teams had a good time and great attitudes, the Kenosha 23U team had the best attitude as they came early on Friday, stayed the entire time at the park and late into to the night on Saturday. By the looks of it they looked like they were ready for another game.

Additional information will be available soon.
