Regular season ends
Last night at the Lorne Brady Memorial Park in Garson , the Rick McDonald Memorial Fastball League regular season came to an end .In the opener at 7 PM , it was a classic between two old rivals .The defending league champions the Dog House Sportsbar North Stars were taking on the Garson Hounds . It became a pitchers duel between two veterans , Garry "Guinou" Lamothe(6-5) of the Hounds and last year's pitching champion Randy Dennis(0-3) of the North Stars ..The Hounds opened the scoring with the first batter , Corey Farmer , who hit a solo home run deep to centre field and held on to that 1-0 lead until the fifth when they scored their second run and then held on for the 2-1 victory , a four point game to clinch sole posession of second place . Gary gave up but four hits ,issued 1 base on balls and struck 3 batters .He was relieved in the 5th frame by Paul Lizotte who gave up 1 run on 1 base hit. Randy Dennis went the distance in suffering his third loss of the season on 5 hits , 1 base on balls and 4 strike outs. Corey Farmer led the way with a perfect 3 for 3 (solo home run,double, one run scored and 2 RBI's) while Joel Belanger hit 1 for 2 in a losing cause for the North Stars.
In the nightcap , the first place finishers the Parry Island Hawks , easily defeated the Pickerel River Cardinals dfumping them 9 to 1 . It was a tight game for the first couple of frames until the young and veteran Hawks bats came alive to put the game away . Matt Tobobundung (5-2) went the distance for the Hawks picking up his fifth voctory of the season in giving up 5 hits , issuing 1 base on balls and striking out 8 batters while his counterpart Alex Ashawasagai(0-1), also going the distance was tagged with his first loss of the 2009 campaing on 13 hits , 4 base on balls and 6 strike outs .. Al Guenette and Troy Nootchtai led the way for the Hawks both hitting 3 for 4 while earl Contin hit 2 for 3 in a losing cause for the Cardinals
Playoffs
The 2009 second season , the first round 2 out of 3 quarter final will now get underway this coming Monday August the 17th at the Rick McDonald Memorial Park in Azilda . In series "A" it will be the 5th place Athletics against the 2nd place Garson Hounds . In series "B" the 4th place Dog House North Stars will take on the 3rd place Pickerel River Cardinals. Predictions
In series "A" between the Hounds and the Athletics , the Hounds should easily move on and takle the series in straight games while in series "B" I expect this one one to go the limit with the North Stars prevailing which would set up a Hounds-North Stars semi "D" anf a Cardinals-Hawks semi "C" ..
Brad Rienguette 4th Annual Northnern Ontario Ladies and Men's Open Fastball Championships
The Northerns , in its fourth year officially gets underway one week from today at the Rick McDonald Memorial Psrk in Azilda . Prior to the start of the games , earlier in the day both Brad Rienguette (presently fighting pancreatic/liver cancer) and Hall of Fame pitcher Metro Szerryk will be both honored in news conference at City Hall aound 3 PM . Both men will also throw out the firts ceremonial pitch in Azilda at approx. 6:30 PM .The full schedule for the tournament will be sent to all medias no later than Monday evening August the 17th or Tuesday morning August the 18th with details of other events surrounding the tournament.
