Kitchener WaterlooKolts Peewee Boys Bring Home Gold
TheKitchener-Waterloo Peewee Kolts Boys Fastball Team won the 2009 EasternCanadian Championship held in St. John’s, NFLD from Aug 27th-30th. Eachyear, the top two teams from each of the provinces between Ontario andNewfoundland qualify to participate in this national championship,which is held in one of the Atlantic Provinces.
The group of 13 and 14 year olds,coached by Gilles Butcher and Bruce Young, earned a berth in thechampionships by winning the Ontario Amateur Softball AssociationEliminations Tournament held at the end of June in Stratford, Ontario.The Kolts record of 6 wins and 1 loss at the Eliminations Tournamentwas best of the sixteen teams from across Ontario that participated.
At the Eastern Canadian Championship, the Koltswent undefeated with a record of 7 wins and 0 losses, including 3shutout victories. The Kolts clinched the championshipwith a 7-0 victory over Newfoundland’s Waterford Valley Express playingthrough the heavy rains of tropical storm Danny which hit St. John’s onSunday.
Kolts pitcher Johnathan Baker earned the toppitcher award at the tournament and was also named tournament MVP,while shortstop Evan Buelher and center fielder Alex McKay were namedto the Eastern Canadian All-Star Team.
This team of athletes madeKitchener-Waterloo and the province of Ontario proud with their goodsportsmanship and outstanding performance. While visitingNFLD, the players had the opportunity to make new friends, and toexperience some of Newfoundland’s traditions and history.
The KW Kolts players and coaches aregrateful for the support that they received from many individuals,corporations, and associations and which made this trip and experiencepossible.
