Update on Bob (Bongo) Baird

September 16, 2009

Toronto, ON

Bob (Bongo) Baird is in the hospital in  Burlington, ON

This message is being sent to those in Bob's email address book who I either know or was able to deduce who you are.  It's not an exhaustive list of those that may wish to be updated and as I've done it as a BCC  and you don't know who is receiving it, I ask that you forward on to anyone you feel should/may wish to know.  And, I apologize to those who have emailed or left voice messages over the past few months who may not have received a response.

Since having his kidney and a football sized tumour removed in mid May Bob has experienced various complications from the cancer and side effects from the targeted therapy drugs and was hospitalized 3 times.  In mid July we learned the treatments were not effective and while the leasions on his liver were remaining stable those on his lungs were growing and multipling.

Seeing some of you in June in Smithville and Moncton was a big boost to his spirits and while unable to be at either the ISF's or the ISC he was able to watch and enjoy many of  the games via  the internet.  My hope and plan was to bring him out to the Canadians last month but he didn't have the strenght having just returned from the hospital where he had 4 litres of fluid removed from his right lung.

Colin and I had been caring for him at home, however had to hospitalize him this past Thursday.  He is now receiving palliative care with pain management being the primary focus.

Sandy

Hi Sandy,

Just wanted to take a quick moment and pass along my thoughts and prayers for Bongo from myself and the entire Executive of the World Fastball Invitational In Monkton.

I was delighted to see you both at this yr's event - even having known his condition I thought he looked and was doing well.  Not surprising he felt invigorated and happy after being at the ballpark though is it!!!  LOL   Thats our Bongo!

If at all possible, is he able to have visitors?  I may be coming to the area sometime soon and would love to stop in and say hi.

Please pass along this msg....

Our lives can be measured in innings.  Some are cut short due to rain.  For Bob, it's still only the bottom of the 6th. - and he's at the plate.  Tell him to tie this game up and send to extra innings for me.  We need this one to go longer.

Thanks for your message, I'll pass it on to Bob today.  He is up to visitors and is in Joseph Brant hospital in Burlington room 5028.

I do not know if anyone has forwarded this to you yet, but I thought everyone would want to know about this.  Bongo was the trainer for the Toronto Gators and for many teams since.  He also had an illustrious playing career prior to that.  Maybe someone could shed some light on his playing career.  Are there any trainers in the ISC Hall of Fame?  If not, Bongo should definitely be the first.  He was always the first at the park to help someone whether it was a teammate, opponent, or a fan.
