Cool Hand Lukes are Niagara Falls League champs

October 1, 2009

Niagara Falls, ON

Cool Hand Lukes wins the 2009 Niagara Falls League championship with a tense hard fought 2-1 win over Storms Fury last night to take the best of 5 series 3-1.
Good pitching, solid defense and making the most of your limited opportunities has been the key to winning baseball games for a 100 years and it was no different this series.

Tom Berube for Lukes and Scott Wagar for the Fury lock horns again for game 4. The Fury bats are alive early on but all to show for it are some loud outs as they were being hit right at the Lukes defense. Wagar is dominant early on only allowing a Mark Hall single. In the T3 the Fury get a rally going. Rob Diguili leads off with a single and with two outs Ray Carr draws a walk. Fury three stick Adam Dearborn then laces one up the middle that hits Berube in the leg to keep it in the infield and save a run. Dearborn would be safe at first and the bases are loaded for Wagar who also rockets one up the middle that could score two if not for a diving Mark Hall, shortstop for Lukes who finishes the play with the force at second. This is the play of the series. The play takes a little wind out of the Fury and gives Lukes the lift they would need. Berube would settle in and ramp it up for the reminder of the game. In the B6 Lukes leadoff man Will Parent is hit with a pitch to lead off the inning. An out later Berube collects the second Lukes hit on the evening and it was big, the single would put runners on the corners. Parent and the pinch runner Mark Varela would both eventually score from third on a pass ball and wild pitch. With the score 2-0 going into the 7th Fury first baseman Mark Korten hits a one out blast over the right field fence but that would be all the Fury could muster and the Berube gets the last two outs for the series clincher. Wagar and Berube both pitch gems.

Good game ends a good playoff including semi finalists Red Hot Chili Pepper and Hooligan's Dawgs, for the Falls league. The League can only ask for a competitive exciting final and Lukes and Fury delivered it. Congratulations to coach Dave Rotella and all the Lukes players and supporters on the championship. The last piece of League business will be its annual awards banquet Saturday October 17th. The Fury with Berube and some league pickups and Wagar and Dearborn with Millwood Logistics will prepare over the next few months for the AAU in Florida come January.
