Softball Canada Names Senior Men's National Team Assistant Coaches

(Ottawa, ON) Softball Canada is pleased to announce that two coaches have been added to the Senior Men's National Team coaching staff. Marty Kernaghan (Grafton, ON) and Les Howey (Saskatoon, SK) will serve as assistant coaches to Head Coach Don Bates (Saskatoon, SK) at the helm of the Canadian Men's softball team going forward.

Marty Kernaghan returns to the Men's National Team program after serving as an assistant coach from 2005 to 2009, culminating with a Bronze medal at the ISF XII Men's World Championship in Saskatoon last summer. As a player, he won four Canadian Championships with two Most Valuable Player awards, and also won a Gold medal at the 1983 Pan American Games and a Gold medal at the ISF VIII Men's World Championship in 1992.

Les Howey also returns to the program after serving as a guest coach and scout in 2008 and as acting Operations Manager in 2009. He brings a wealth of experience with him as a long-time player and coach in the Saskatoon area, and has run numerous hitting clinics for Softball Saskatchewan. As a player, he played in eight Canadian Championships, and coached in three others. He also served as a coach on the Canadian Men's National Team between 1991 and 1994.

'I am very pleased to be working on a coaching staff with Marty Kernaghan and Les Howey' stated Don Bates, Head Coach of the Senior Men's National Team. 'These two individuals bring a great deal of knowledge and valuable experience to the Canadian Men's National Softball Team. Marty and Les are well respected by the players in the athlete pool and will play a key role in improving an already strong Men's National Team Program.'

The Senior Men's National Team is scheduled to play at the VIII Pan American Softball Championship for Men from November 19th to 27th in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
