                                                         CARDINALS AND HAWKS COLLECT THEIR FIRST WIN OF SEASON
 
                                                                                    It took a couple of weeks into the young season but finally the Pickerel River Cardinals and the Parry Island Hawks , picked their first win of the season . For the Cardinals , it happened on Wednesday June 9th in Whitefish Lake when they defeated the host team Whitefish Steelers  6-3 . Jonathan Contin (1-2)  picked up his first mound victory of the season going the distance ..Contin gave up 8 hits , struck out 10 Steelers and issued no walks.  Chris Docksteter (1-1) also went the distance for the Steelers giving up  11 hits .. striking out 5 Cardinals and issuing 1 base on balls .Ed "Shaq" Panavick Jr (2 runs scored ,1 RBI) and Mike Hoe (run scored ,double ,2 RBI's) both went 2 for 3 for the winners while Misadis Rice (run scored) hit 3 for 4 in a losing cause for the Steelers
                                                                                    On Thursday night in Garson at the Lorne Brady Memorial Park , last year's Commissioner's Cup winners , the Parry Island Hawks , defeated the Cardinals  7 to 3 for their first victory of the season . Matt Tobobundung (1-2) went the distance giving up 7 hits , striking out 7 Cardinals and issuing 4 base on balls. Ed Brennan (0-1) took the loss giving up the mound to Jonathan Contin in the fifth .Both pitchers combined to give up 10 hits , strike out 6 Hawks and issue no base on balls . Winning pitcher  Matt Tobobundung led the way at the plate with a perfect 3 for 3 performance ( 3 runs scored , 2 doubles , home run , 3 runs batted in) Ed Jr Panamick  hit 2 for 2 (walk,RBI)  in a losing cause for the Cardinals .
                                                                                     In one other game this week , the front running Sudbury North Stars remained undefeated with their fifth strait victory as they edged the Parry Island Hawks 7-6 . John Ainslie (4-0) picked up his fourth victory of the season giving up 5 hits , striking out 5 Hawks and issuing  7 walks . Percy Tobobundung (0-1) started and gave way to Matt Tobobundung in the fourth frame. Matt suffered the loss .Both pitchers combined gave up 6 hits , struck out 4 North Stars and issued 5 base on balls . Jesse St Cyr led the winners going 2 for 3 at the plate (triple ,2 runs scored , 2 RBI's) .Matt Tobobundung hit 2 for 3 (home run-2nd of the season , 2 runs scored ,2 RBI's) in a losing cause for the Hawks .
 
Later this week the flyer for the Northern Ontario Championship (ladies and men) for August and a reminder for the ISC World Qualifier in mid July   comes out . The league web site for men (Rick McDonald Memorial Fastball League Welcome) to be up dated this week and the ladies web site (which will be called Nickel Ladies Fastball) to come out
