Softball Canada will add Five New Members to Hall of Fame

(Ottawa, ON) Softball Canada is pleased to announce that Linda Edey (Builder - Alberta), Dave Moore (Official - Saskatchewan), Noreen Murphy (Coach - Saskatchewan), Jackilee Nichol (Athlete - Saskatchewan) and Al Shenduk (Official - Saskatchewan) will be inducted into the Softball Canada Hall of Fame in recognition for their contribution and excellence in the sport of softball across the country. The induction ceremony will take place on November 13th, 2010 in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Linda Edey (Edmonton, AB) was born on November 7th, 1948, and started playing softball in 1961. In 1972, she started coaching, registered as an umpire and also began volunteering as a statistician for the Edmonton Ladies Softball Association. From there, she went became the consummate volunteer, leading to 28 years of involvement with the Softball Alberta as Secretary (1979-1983), Treasurer (1984-1997) and Director of Finance (1998-2005). She also chaired many important national and international events in Alberta, including the first ISF Youth World Softball Championship in 1981 and the Midget Girls (1990 and 2007), Junior Women (2002) and Senior Women (1993 and 1999) Canadian Championships. In addition to all of these accomplishments, Linda was also the draw master for both Softball Canada's Canadian Championships and the Western Canadian Championships from 1995 to 2007. After being inducted to the Softball Alberta Hall of Fame in 2006, Linda passed away on April 12th, 2008.

Dave Moore (Saskatoon, SK), born on November 20th, 1945, is a long-time umpire who has participated in an astounding amount of Canadian Championships and International events. He has been an executive of the Saskatoon Bridge City Umpires Association since 1977 and also served on Softball Saskatchewan's Board of Directors from 1981 to 1987. At the national level, he obtained his Level V International status in 1985 and officiated at the Women's Canadian Slo-Pitch Championship (1998) and four Senior Men's Canadian Fastpitch Championships (1980, 1985, 1994, 2007), while also serving as Umpire in Chief or Deputy Umpire in Chief at several Canadian Championships, Western Canadian Championships and two Canada Games (1993 and 1997). At the international level, he umpired at the ISF Women's World Championship in St. John's Newfoundland in 1994. Each year, Dave also submits questions for the Softball Canada Fast Pitch and Slo-Pitch National exams, and regularly holds rule interpretation clinics in Saskatchewan.

Noreen Murphy (Saskatoon, SK) grew up in Ontario before being recruited to play for Harmony Centre in Saskatoon in 1980. She went on to play in four provincial championships between 1980 and 1984, winning a Gold medal at the Canadian Senior Women's Championship in 1980, and also represented Canada at the European Championships in 1980 and at the World Games 1 in 1981. She started her coaching career in 1985, leading the Lloydminster Midget AA Blues to back-to-back national championship titles in 1985 and 1986 before moving on to the Lorne's Lazers from 1987 to 1994.She led the Lazers to eight straight Canadian Championship appearances during those years at various levels (Midget, Junior and Senior), and was also the Head Coach of the 1997 Saskatchewan Canada Games Team. At the international level, Noreen was a Team Canada assistant coach for the 1991 and 1995 ISF Junior Women's World Championship and at the 2004 Olympic Games, a guest coach at the 1996 Olympic Games, and Head Coach of the 2003 ISF Junior Women's World Championship team, the 2004 Developmental and World University Games teams, and the 2005 Elite team.

Jacki Nichol (Saskatoon, SK), born on April 10th, 1972, began her softball career at the community level at the age of 6, and as she got older she eventually played for Noreen Murphy's Lorne Lazers (Midget and Junior) before graduating to DBJ Leasing. She played in 13 Canadian Championships between 1987 and 2002, winning a Gold medal in 2000 and Bronze medals in 1998 and 2001. At the international level, Jacki is the only player in Canadian softball history to play in two ISF Junior Women's World Championships (1987 and 1991). She went on to play on the Senior Women's National Team from 1998 to 2002, winning a Silver medal at the 1999 Pan American Games and serving as Team Captain for Canada at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, the 2001 Pan American Qualifier and the 2002 ISF World Championship in Saskatoon. She was inducted to the Saskatoon Sports Hall of Fame in 2005, and is currently on the Board of Directors for the Saskatoon Sports Hall of Fame (2006-present).

Al Shenduk (Sherwood Park, AB) was born April 6th, 1943, joining the Edmonton Men's Fastball League as a player in 1967 after playing four years at the University of Idaho on a baseball scholarship. As his playing career came to an end, he registered as a Softball Canada umpire in 1977 and went on to officiate in three Senior Men's (1982, 1985 and 1987), one Senior Women's (1990) and one Junior Women's (1992) Canadian Championships. In addition to his success on the field, Al has also been very involved on the administrative side of softball, hosting and attracting many clinics in the province of Alberta and serving as Softball Alberta's Umpire in Chief from 1990 to 2005. He was also the UIC for numerous Canadian and Western Canadian Championships, and also contributed to Softball Canada on numerous projects. He was inducted to the Softball Alberta Hall of Fame in 2006, and recently joined Softball Alberta's Board of Directors (2010).

These five inductees will join the Softball Canada Hall of Fame at an Induction ceremony which will be held Saturday, November 13th, 2010. The ceremony will be held in conjunction with Softball Canada's Annual General Meeting in Regina, Saskatchewan, which will take place from November 11-14.
