Results from the 2010 OASA Masters Championships in Niagara
First the thank you's
To Dana (Waterloo), Ted (Bracebridge), Paul (Aurora), Pete (Waterdown), Herb (Hooligan's) and Mark (Fury) thanks for organizing your teams and managing them to play a competitive tournament in a very sportsmanlike manner . Managers can never get enough thank you's in this game.
To the volunteers, the Niagara Fury boys for all their work over the weekend as well as our regular beer tent volunteers including Al Greatrix, Butch Provost, Dave Jackson, Mark Korten and Joe McMaster who live at the park for the weekend and all the scorekeepers and announcers, especially Dave Rotella, Rich Vassos, Tommy Watkinson and Ray Carr who called most the games, also Marcel Bilodeau for the sound equipment.
To the OASA especially Bob Abbot and Paddy Fitzgerald-Nolan who spent the entire weekend administering the tournament. As well to Mary Myers for her assistance.
And of course to Al Doran for keeping the info flowing.

Rob Greatrix and Tom Berube score in the first inning only to see Aurora tie it up with single runs in the third and fourth. Joe McMaster leads off the fifth with a double off the fence and scores on Ray Turner's single. Duemo and Berube combine to hold the relentless Aurora team off the board the final two innings. Baker had a couple hits for Aurora.

Crazy play changes the game. Classics up 2-1 (all runs via solo homeruns- Rick Ash and Brian O'Neil for Classics and Brian Prowse for the Hammer ) in the sixth. Waterdown gets the lead runner on when Tom Hogg singles and the Hammer attempt to sacrifice him to second. The Classics go for the force at second and the ball goes over the head of the guy covering the bag and rolls to the fence in centrefield. The Waterdown bunter, Dave Brownhill catches up to the Hogg at home plate and the throw arrives a bit late, but at one point there were at least two or three Classics and the two Waterdown runners who both slid home all at the plate. Crazy, but it gives Waterdown the 3-2 lead and Neil holds in the seventh.

Over on diamond 2 the score was 3-3 in the sixth when Bracebridge explodes for six in the sixth.

As reported in my earlier post both Berube and Hurst were on their game. A large crowd took this one in and they were not disappointed. International rule applies in the 10th inning. Pete Kucharek and Mark Korten each had clutch two out hits for the Fury in the top of ten to stake the Fury to a 2-0 lead. The Hammer respond with Dave Brownhill single (Brownhill was all over the basepaths the whole game), Brian Prowse reached on an infield hit loading the bases for Steve Gillis. This is not a good spot for any team to have to try and get by Gillis, the guy in my opinion is one the best hitters around and he makes the Fury pay with a triple to score all three runners. Great game and the Fury congratulate the always classy Hammers boys on their victory.

Jim Hurst the well deserved recipient of the Most Valuable Pitcher award.
It was a weekend of great fastball with tons of camaraderie. They teams spent the majority of the weekend renewing old friendships, great to see.
The tournament after a three year run in Niagara Falls moves to Bracebridge next year. Ted Conway along with the OASA will be sending out information. I, on behalf of the Niagara Fury players and coaches would like to extend our thanks to all the teams that participated the past three years and to the OASA for extending the invitation for us to host. The Fury players should also be recognized for donating to the OASA scholarship fund the past three years with proceeds from the beer tent.
