3rd Annual Gil Read Memorial Men's Fastpitch Tournament

July 27, 2010

Ottawa, ON

The Gil Read Memorial Foundation is extremely pleased to announce that the 3rd Annual Fastball tournament was a fantastic success. The weather held off and the fans came out to watch. The organizers sold 800 hamburgers, 500 hotdogs and over 2,500 beer. The foundation considers the tournament "our best ever" and would like to thank everyone involved including all of our volunteers, the Carp Agricultural Society, The Village of Carp and all the fans that came out to support the event and a special thanks to Warren Lathem of the Carp Community Association for all of his help both in preparation for the event and after.

The tournament featured 10 teams from across Eastern Ontario and Quebec. The teams were split into 2 divisions of 5 and each played 4 round robin games.

The Semi final games on Sunday afternoon featured the Quyon Combat Flyers (4-0) vs. the Carp I4C Victory (2-1-1) and The Kars Aces (4-0) vs. the Donaconna Blue Socks (2-1-1). Quyon defeated Carp 4-1 and Kars downed Donaconna 8 -5. This set up a rematch of last years final when the Kars Aces (Formerly known as Ottawa Easton Thunder) defeated the Quyon Combat Flyers 4 - 2. The Easton team has been the only team to win the tournament thus far having defeated Carp I4C Victory in the finals of the inaugural tournament in 2008 and Quyon in 2009.

This year however Quyon took some revenge, defeating the Kars Aces 8-1 in a mercy shortened 5 inning game capturing the title and the $1,700.00 prize money. The Kars Aces took home $800 for second place.

The story of the tournament was without question, 22 year old Micksburg native Joran Graham of the Quyon Combat Flyers. Joran pitched in 4 of the Flyers games wining all 4 with 40 strikeouts in 23 innings. While being the top pitcher of the tournament and putting up impressive stats, it could not come close to his batting performance. Joran finished the tournament 10 for 14 (a ..715 batting average) with 4 walks, 4 home runs and 17 RBI. In the final game alone, Joran was 3-3 with a single, a double and a 3 run home run for a total of 6 rbi’s while striking out 9 Kars Aces in the 5 inning mercy. Joran Graham was named the tournament MVP.

The foundation would again like to thank all the teams that participated in the event and the fans for all of their support. We hope to host this event in the same venue for many years to come.
