After having started the season with difficulty and with younger and newer players , the resurgent Steelers of the Whitefish Lake First Nation are now coming together . They have managed of late to defeat the first place North Stars followed by the second place Garson Hounds and last night on their home turf and in brand new uniforms soundly defeated the Cardinals of Pickerel River 8 to 1 . Veteran Al Guenette(3-3)  was at his best in giving up but one hit , a solo shot to centre field by Pat Brennan Jr on five hits while striking out 5 batters and not issuing a single base on balls . It was Al's third victory of the season and now post a 500 record . Jonathan Contin (5-7) started for the Cardinals and suffered the loss giving way to Pat Brennan Jr in the 6th frame .Both pitchers combined to give up 8 runs ( 6 earned) on 9 base hits while striking out  4 opposition batters and  not issuing a single base on balls . It must be noted that the young Steelers established two league record last night in their win . They stole 5 bases in the 5th inning alone for a new record (previous record was 3) and a total of 8 stolen bases for the game ( a new record) surpassing the previous record of 6 in a game . Both previous record were owned by the North Stars . Shannon Gonawabi and Al Guennette led the way for the winners both going 2 for 3 at the plate while Pat Brennan Jr hit 1 for 3 ( a solo home run ) in a losing cause for the Cardinals . Play resumes in league action tonight in Garson at the Lorne Brady Memorial Park when the Whitefish Lake Steelers take on the Garson Hounds at 7 PM followed by the nightcap under the lights scheduled for 9 PM when the Parry Island Hawks face the Pickerel River Cardinals . There are only two weeks left in the regular season .
