Roy L. Simmons, age 88, of Kearney died Monday, August 9, 2010 at the Good Samaritan Hospital.
Funeral Services will be Thursday, August, 12, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church with Pastor Stan Murdoch officiating. Graveside services and burial will be at 3:30 p.m. in the Sumner Cemetery with military rites at the grave by the Sumner American Legion Post # 41 and the Nebraska National Guard Military Honors Squad.Visitation will be from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and one hour prior to services Thursday afternoon at the First Baptist Church. Memorials are planned to the First Baptist Church. Roy was born February 26, 1922 in Miller, Nebraska to Lester R. and Bessie L. (Day) Simmons. He graduated from Sumner High School in 1939 and moved to California where he worked in an airplane factory. He moved to Omaha in 1942 and worked in an airplane factory there. Roy married Avon C. Simpson on August 2, 1942 in Plattsmouth. He entered the service on October 12, 1942 and served in the U.S. Army until he was discharged on Jan.. 29, 1946. Following his discharge, Roy and Avon lived in Lexington where Roy worked at the Chevrolet dealership until 1949 when they moved to a farm northeast of Sumner. They lived on the farm until May of 1984 when they moved to Kearney. They were members of the First Baptist Church in Kearney. Roy was an enthusiastic supporter of all sports. He had a special love and commitment to his children and grandchildren and all of their athletic endeavors.

Roy was preceded in death by his wife-Avon on May 18, 2005, his parents and one sister.
