August 25, 2010

Sudbury, ON

NORTH STARS  ADVANCE , HAWKS TIE SERIES

Two exciting games were played in semi final action on Wednesday night in Whitefish .In the opener between the Sudbury North Stars and the Garson Hounds ,two league veteran teams ,the North Stars were looking to end the series and move on to their fifth consecutive league finals but as the saying goes , the deciding game is never easy . It certainly was the case here . The Hounds took a 3-1 lead after two frames only to have the North Stars score three in the third inning and knot up the game at 4-4 .The North Stars score one more key run in the seventh only to have the Hounds do the same in the bottom of the last frame and force extra innings . The always strong North Stars score four big runs in the top of the eight while the Hounds can only come up with two .The North Stars win 9-7 and 2-0 in the best of three series to move on to the finals . John Ainslie (2-0) goes the distance for his second win of the 2010 playoffs giving up 7 runs ( 6 earned) on 10 hits while striking out three batters and issuing three base on balls( one was intentional) .Eric Abitong (0-2) also went all the way suffering his second defeat in giving up 9 runs (8 earned) on 9 base hits while fanning 3 batters 5 batters (3 were intentional). Joel Belanger led the hitters for the winners going 2 for 4 (double ,2 runs scored ,2 RBI's) with a walk with teammate John Ainslie hitting 2 for 5 (run scored) while Robbie Edwards hit 2 for 4 in a losing cause for the Hounds .
In the nightcap when the Parry Island Hawks and the Whitefish Lake First Nation Steelers met , the Hawks were in a due or die situation trailing that series of best of three 1-0 . The Hawks were not to be denied as they scored a big five runs in the third  after coming up blank in the first two innings but then held on as the young bucks from the Steelers scored three late inning s runs ..The Hawks were then hard pressed to hold and  win 5-3 tying up the series at one win a piece . Matt Tobobondung (3-0) picked up his third win of the playoffs giving up  3 runs (2 unearned) on 5 base hits while striking out 9 batters and not issuing a single base on balls .Al Guenette (1-1) started for the Steelers and took the loss ,his first of the playoffs giving way to Henry Nootchtai in the fifth .Both pitchers combined to give up 5 runs (all runs were scored on the starter and all earned) on 6 base hits while striking out 8 batters and issuing 3 base on balls . Percy Tobobondung led the way for the Hawks going 2 for 2 with two base on balls .Jim Pawis also hit 2 for 3 for the Hawks while Rick Nootchtai hit 2 for 2 (double) in a losing cause for the Steelers .
The 3rd and deciding game in this series will now go next Wednesday September the 1st in Whitefish under the lights at 9 PM .
