Merrill, MI Mayan Insurance Wins Its' Own Invitational Tournament
The Frankenmuth Driving School fast pitch softball team was literally washed out this week in the Thumb Travel League. The team currently is two and one in the standings. This Memorial Weekend FDS traveled to Merrill for the Mayan Insurance Invitational. There were eight teams entered in the tournament. Frankenmuth played the host team on Friday night. Winning pitcher Jeff Buckley allowed 4 hits and struck out six. Mayan won 10-2 in five innings.
Saturday morning Frankenmuth defeated the Archers of Tri-Cities. Matt Spiekerman was the winning pitcher. The score was 10-5. The bats came alive. Gunnar Bouvy and Will Tack were both 3 for 4 including 2 run home run blasts for both of them.
Simmons of Midland-Auburn was the next opponent and Frankenmuth had to beat them to make the championship round. Jon Gwizdala was the winning pitcher. He allowed 6 hits and struck out 3. Mark Gwizdala was 2 for three with 2 rbi;s. Will Tack also was 2 for 3 and the other 2 rbi's as Frankenmuth won 4-2. Marc Stasik was 2 for 4 also for FDS. This game sent FDS to the championship round on Sunday,
Frankenmuth was the number two seed in their bracket. They went up against the M-46er's who won their bracket. The 46er's wasted little time jumping out to a 7-0 lead after 4 innings. Mark Gwizdala homered in the fifth inning to put Frankenmuth on the board.In the sixth inning, Marc Stasik drew a one out walk.Gunnar Bouvy singled. After the second out Jake Bouvy walked, loading the bases. Mark Gwizdala singled two runners home, cutting the lead to 7-3. Nate Eickhoff singled another home. Jon Gwizdala singled home another run cutting the lead to 7-6. Ben Fleischmann singled the tying run home. John L Boone singled Fleischmann home with the go ahead run. Frankenmuth scored all 8 runs after two were out. The lead was short lived. The 46er's scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for good. FDS went down 1-2-3 in the seventh. Final score 9-8. The team battled all the way back. They finished third in the eight team tournament. Jeff Buckley pitched the championship game as Mayan won its' own tournament over league foe 46er's. It was a well run tournament as the Mayan crew worked all day Friday to get the extremely wet fields in shape for the weekend.
