CONTIN STRIKES OUT 16 BATTERS
Three games were played in the last couple days in the Rick McDonald Memorial Fastball League . In as single game on Thursday evening in Whitefish , Jonathan Contin(3-1) from the Pickerel River Cardinals was on his game as he faced only 29 batters in the 7 inning tilt striking out 16 of them for a career high and also the largest amount this year for a pitcher . He gave up but 5 hits and issued but two base on balls in helping his teammates defeat the host Whitefish Lake Falcons 5-2 His counterpart Troy Nootchtai (1-2) suffered his second mound loss giving up but five hits ,striking out one batter and issuing one base on balls . Contin hit 1 for 3 a double to help his own cause while Sid Nebenionquit hit 2 for 3 in a losing cause for the Falcons .
Thursday night at the Lorne Brady Memorial Park in Garson , the defending champions Sudbury North Stars at 4-0 continued their hitting parade in dumping the Whitefish Lake F.N. Falcons 10-2 . John Ainslie (4-0) picked up his 4th mound victory but gave way to veteran , elder statesman 61 year old Bob Dolan in the fifth inning . For his side Ainslie only gave up 4 hits ,struck out 3 batters and issued but one base on balls . Dolan not as fast as he was some,e 25 years ago but still had the drop , the change up and the odd rise working giving up but one run ,two hits and striking out one batter in his one inning of play . Danny Nootchtai(0-1) started and suffered the loss giving way to Andy Nootchtai (0-0) in the 3rd who in turn gave way to Troy Nootchtai (1-2) in the fifth frame . All three pitchers combined to give up 10 hits while striking out four batters and issuing 3 base on balls . Jesse St Cyr led the way for the North Stars missing the cycle by just a single (2 run homer) with teammate Curtis Hambley hitting 2 for 3 (2 run homer) while Brendon Biederman hit 2 for 3 (solo home run ) in a losing cause for the Falcons ..
In the nightcap , the surging Pickerel River Cardinals picked their third victory in four games trouncing the slumping Swick Hounds of Garson 13-6 .. Jonathan Contin (3-1) picked his third victory in giving up 14 hits while striking out 8 batters (54 for the year) and issuing 1 base on balls while Gary “GNUâ€Â Lamothe (1-2) suffered the loss in giving up 20 hits ,striking out 2 and issuing 2 base on bal.balls . Jonathan Contin and Jim Pawis both hit 3 for 4 for the Cardinals while Corey Farmer went a perfect 4 for 4 (home run ,two doubles in a losing cause for the Swick Hounds .
After long discussions on a new formula for a revision to the schedule it was finalized on Thursday night where each playing night will have kits doubleheader rotated . The first doubleheader will be this coming Monday night in Azilda at the Rick McDonald Memorial Park . At 7 PM the Sudbury North Stars take on the Swick Hounds of Garson and that will be followed by the Whitefish Lake First Nation taking on the Pickerel River Cardinals .You can catch the remainder of the schedule attached to this report( the red section indicates the new part )
The 11th annual Rick McDonald Memorial Fastball Tournament with many of the monies going to charity goes next Friday June the 10th till Sunday June the 12th .. All teams are guaranteed 3 games .The entry fee is $350 . The prize money de[pending on 8 entries will 1st place $700 and 2nd place $350 .
