Two local men will be remembered this weekend as the Rick McDonald Memorial Tournament takes the field for its 11th year.

The tournament is held each year in memory of Rick McDonald, a Sudbury police officer killed in the line of duty in 1999, and his brother Danny, a Sudbury jail guard and administrator who died tragically in 2007.

Action will begin June 9 at the Rick McDonald Memorial Park in Azilda, with a youth challenge for local Grade 5 and 6 students.

“It will give us an opportunity to introduce the young people of our community to Rick and Danny assuring their memory lives on,â€Â Corinne Fewster, Rick's widow, said.

After Rick's death, Fewster and Danny started the Rick McDonald Memorial Law Enforcement Tournament, as a way of keeping his memory alive.

“Rick loved ball,â€Â Fewster told Northern Life in a previous interview. “His two loves were policing and baseball. So it just made sense to put a tournament together.â€Â

Following Danny's death, the tournament was held in honour of both brothers.

This year, in addition to a mixed slo-pitch tournament and fastball tournament running Friday through Sunday, there will also be a comedy night Saturday at the Dr. Edgar Leclaire Centre in Azilda. The event is arranged through LaffCity and is open to the community.

Comedian
Ron Josol
will headline the event, with Winston Spear, and host Rhiannon Archer. Doors open at 8 p.m. and the show is set to begin at 9 p.m.

Tickets are $30 at the door, or $25 in advance from Records on Wheels or by phoning Fewster at 705-918-1814 or Sandra Taschereau at 705-690-9581.

Money raised from this year's tournament will be split amongst several local youth organizations.
