Well it appears that it has finally stopped raining in Southwestern Ontario and the fastball season is finally in full swing. Plans are well under way in the small town of Tavistock to host the largest and best Men's Tournament this community has ever presented. One thing that every great event needs however is a great name!! Something to identify the event for year's to come. Tavistock's time has finally come in that regard!!
Cephas Roth was a long time resident of Tavistock. He was a charter member of the Tavistock Optimist Club. He served on the Tavistock Agriculture Society and the Tavistock Arena Board. He was an active member of the Tavistock Curling Club and a long time sponsor of ALL Minor, Junior and Senior sports teams in Tavistock. He was part of the Arena Fund Raising Committee and Tavistock Community Health. Some of his happiest times were spent at the arena and the ball park watching first his children, and then his grandchildren, compete for his town of Tavistock. Cephas was a true gentleman and a friend to everyone he met. Sadly our good friend was taken away from all of us on November 11th, 2010 after a short illness. How fitting it was that his passing came on "Remembrance Day" as Cephas was a person that the Community of Tavistock will always "Remember".
The Tavistock Minor Ball Association could think of no better honour for such a great community spirit, than to name our ever growing Men's Fastball Tournament in his honour. Therefore Tavistock Minor Ball Association is proud to present to the fastball community the "Cephas Roth Memorial Men's Fastball Tournament". It is our goal in Tavistock to keep this tournament growing and expanding well into the future, and we are pleased to carry on this event in memory of such a great community leader.
We plan to have Cephas' Family at our Opening Ceremony to say a few words and throw out the Opening Pitch.
As previously mentioned, we are moving quickly towards our July event and all preparations are well under way. We are currently awaiting final confirmation from our last team and it looks like we will be moving forward with a 10 team field in 2011!! Our featured BBQ will be up and running day and night for your nourishment needs and our beer tent will be pumping out the music and festive atmosphere from the opening pitch until the final out on Sunday!! Look for some LIVE MUSIC in the tent as well on the Saturday Night featuring former fastball Legend and Kitchener Hallman Twin, Brian "Chubbs" Stere.
Saturday afternoon, we will again feature the North Waterloo Bantam Boys All Star Game on the Main Diamond, promoting the "Stars" of our fastball future. 50/50 tickets will be on sale each and every day and night and the entire weekend is shaping up to be a fastball festival of fun for players and fans alike.
On another note, our tournament has also been granted ISC Qualifier Status for Eastern Canada. The top finisher from Eastern Canada will be awarded an Automatic Berth to the 2012 ISC World Championship Tournament in August of next year.
We hope to publish the final schedule for the tournament no later than June 30th. We will be starting the event this year on the Thursday (July 14th) with two games followed by a full slate of games on both the Optimist and the Queens (main Diamond) Park Diamonds Friday night and all day Saturday. Playoffs will begin Sunday Morning with the Finals tentatively scheduled for around 1:30pm Sunday afternoon.
