Houston Carnage At San Antonio Glow Worm

July 6, 2011

San Antonio, TX

The Houston Carnage finished second at the 47th Annual Glow Worm Tournament in San Antonio, Texas this weekend. July 2-3, 2011.

Game 1: Houston Carnage 15
             San Antonio Knights 3
The Carnage weekend started off saturday with a 15-3 win over The San Antonio Knights. Houston jumped ahead early in this one with homeruns by second baseman Derrick kennedy and catcher Freddy Carmona. On the mound Joe Crouch kept The Knights in check allowing 2 earned runs on 3 hit's.

 Game2: Houston Carnage2
             Austin A's 0

The second game of the day featured a match up of two top Canadian pitchers, Jeff Farion for Houston (on loan from #6 ISC ranked Saskatoon Diamondbacks) and Michael Joseph from Ontario for The Austin A's. This one was decided in the first inning as The Carnage capitalized on two error's by the A's. The Carnage scored 2 and that was all they would need as Farion threw a 2 hit 15K shutout advancing them to the third round.

Game3: Houston Carnage 1
            Los Cruses Wolfpack 0

Game three against The Los Cruses, New Mexico Wolfpack was highlighted by an awesome pitchers duel between Jeff Farion and Tony Mancha. Both pitchers were nearly unhittable as they combined for a game total of 28k's. Both dugouts were slack jawed as they watched Farion and Mancha take turn mowing down the opposing batters. In the bottom of the 7th The Carnage patience paid off as Derrick Kennedy led off the inning with a single that was followed by a Nick Handy infield hit, Doug Cain followed that up with a walk to load the bases which set up a shallow sac-fly by Clayton Cauthen to win the game for The Carnage 1-0 and move them on to the semi finals Sunday morning.

Game4: San Antonio Titans 4
            Houston carnage 1

Sunday morning The Carnage found themselves up against their rival The Titans. Houston had not beaten The Titans in two tries this year and sunday was no different as Titans pitcher Sebastian Gervasutti proved to be to much for The Carnage bats. Joe Crouch threw three perfect innings for Houston before a fourth inning walk and a one out single set the table for San Antonio clean up hitter Mike Govea. Govea drove a double to the fence scoring two runs. The Titans added two more in the frame and held on for the victory.

Game5: Houston Carnage 5
            Los Cruses Wolfpack 3

The Sunday morning loss dropped The Carnage to the losers bracket final where they would once again face Wolfpack ace Tony Moncha. Houston centerfielder Tim Craft led off the first inning with a triple and would later score on an rbi single by Doug Cain. The Carnage got to Moncha early in this one scoring five in the first two innings thanks in part to a two out Tyler Hayes homerun. Jeff Farion was once again dominant through 4 innings of work, allowing only a bloop single in the third. Joe Crouch came in to try and seal the deal for Houston but got into trouble with two walk in the sixth and a three run bomb that is probably about to land in the south Pacific ocean as I type. Farrion returned with two outs and a runner on second in the final frame to struck out the last batter and pick up the win and the save.

Game 6: San Antonio Titans 2
              Houston Carnage 0

The championship game of the 47th Annual Glow Worm was another pitchers dual. This time Jeff Farion faced off against Titans fireballer Juan Potolicchio. Both pitchers were in control throwing no hitters until the top of the 5th when Titans first baseman Mike Contreras ripped a triple down the line. He scored on a ground ball to second two batters later. The Titans put up an unearned run in the sixth and held on to win The Glow Worm.

Tim Craft and Freddy Carmona both received all tournament plaques for their efforts this weekend. Derrick Kennedy was named the tournaments top hitter with a .538 BA. and Jeff Farion 3-1 was the Most Valuable Pitcher allowing only 1 earned run while striking out 58.

With this second place finish The Carnage move to 18-5 in tournament play. They are in action again July 13-16 at The Houston Laatin Tournament.

The very knowledgeable and respectful Texas fastpitch fans got to see some of the best pitching in the game this weekend. There were some very tight games and a lot of late inning heroics to be had. Fans and players fought the sun this weekend with cold beer and shade to be part of this historic event. Thank you to the Rios family for hosting another wonderful tournament.
