Home Run Fest in Whitefish

Two games were played Wednesday night in Whitefish Lake for the Rick McDonald Memorial Fastball League . In the opener , the veteran Sudbury North Stars came from behind a two run deficit in the 5th inning  to explode for 8 runs in the 6th in a 13-6 rout over second place Pickerel River Cardinals and run their undefeated record to 10 and 0 . Young rookie , Mike Greslow (1-0) in his first career outing started to pick up the win and gave way to veteran John Ainslie in the sixth .Both pitchers combined to give up 10 hits , strike out one batter while issuing but two base on balls . Chris Vanvelkenburg (2-2) started for the Cardinals and was tagged with his second loss giving up to Jonathan Contin (4-2) in the sixth frame .Both pitchers combined to give up 13 hits ,fan 8 batters and issue 2 base on balls .Teammates Jesse St Cyr , Chad St Cyr (double) , John Ainslie and Mike Greslow led the North Star attack each going 2 for 4 at the plate while Chris Vanvelkenburg hit 3 for 3 in a losing cause for the Pickerel boys . Pat Brennan also hit a two run shot for the Cardinals .
                                             In the nightcap , the host Whitefish Lake First Nation Falcons scored 5 runs in the opening frame and won going away 13 to 6 over the Swick Hounds of Garson .The game was called after 5 innings because of the seven run mercy rule . Danny Nootchtai (2-3) started for the Falcons in picking up his second mound victory being relieved in the 4th by Troy Nootchtai (2-4) . The young hurlers combined to give up 8 hits , strike out 3 batters while issuing 2 base on balls . Veteran Al Guenette (0-1) went the distance for the Hounds suffering his first loss in only his second outing of the season giving up 12 hits , fanning 3 batters and not issuing a single base on balls . Sid Nebenionquit led the way for the winners going a perfect 3 for  3 including his second round tripper of the season (two run bomb in the 3rd) with teammates Justin Nootchtai(double , three run homer) and Brendan Biederman( double , two run home ) helping out with a 2 for 3 performances  . Justin Soucy also helped out with a two run shot to left field . Bryan Welsh hit 2 for 3 in a losing cause for the Hounds .
                                              Play resumes Thursday night July the 7th at the Lorne Brady Memorial Park in Garson when the 1st place Sudbury North Stars take on the Whitefish Lake First Nation Falcons at 7 PM followed by the nightcap under the lights at 9 PM with the slumping Swick Hounds of Garson facing the Cardinals of Pickerel River .
