OASA SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

Twins qualify, Selects Win.

Owen Sound Verge Selects won the OASA Senior Fastpitch championships
this past weekend in New Dundee beating the Hallman Twins 6 - 0 in the
championship game. Matt Leahy got the win for the Selects over Andy
Jackson. Both went 7 innings, Leahy allowed only 2 hits and rang up
ten Ks. Jackson allowed 6 runs, only 2 earned, on 7 Select hits, 6
strike outs and 2 walks. Owen Sound got picked up 3 runs in the
1st, added 2 in the 3rd and 1 more in the 5th.

It was the 2nd win in the tounament for the Selects over the Twins
Dustin Veenhof and Matt Leahy combined for a 4 - 3 win over Casey
Halstead earlier in the day.

Owen Sound enters the CASA national championships as host club and
Ontario champs.

Port Elgin Blue Devils finished 3rd and along with the Hallman Twins
also qualified for the Canadian Fastpitch Championships to be held in
Owen Sound Aug 28th to Sept 4th.

INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

KW CUBS win OASA Great Lakes

The KW Cubs opened the Great Lakes with a 7 - 0 win over Harwood
Corners on Friday nite, met the Toronto Gators on Saturday morning and
beat the Gators 6 - 0, then met the Cobourg Force on Saturday evening;
another win 6 - 3 and onto the winners bracket as top seed Sunday
afternoon.

Ryan French went 7 innings for the Cubs in the Harwood Corners game,
allowed 3 hits and had 9 Ks in the 7 -0 shutout. Scott Wagar picked
up the second win allowing only 2 hits to the Gators, and striking
out 12. In the Cobourg game Ryan French again on the rubber, this
time allowing 3 runs on 6 hits, and 7 Ks. Mike Crawford went 4
innings for Cobourg allowing 4 runs on 6 hits..Kyle Linton went 3 for
the Force, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits.

The Wellington Sox, out of Harriston, opened the Great Lakes with a 5
inning 9 - 2 loss to the Palermo/Hammer of the Golden Horseshoe
League. Jim Hurst got the win for the Hammer. Saturday afternoon
the Sox, well out in front in the South Perth standings, started the
long road back, having to win 5 games if they wanted the Great Lakes
championship.

First up, the Toronto Gators, 3pm Saturday....Nick Goetz (Sox) and Doug
Hoffman (Gators) both went 7 innings scoreless...and into the
International tie breaker in the 8th..still scoreless, and finally, in
the 9th....the Sox picked up 6 runs, 4 on a Ryan Fisk Grand Slam...The
Gators answered with 3 in the bottom of the 9th, but not enough to win
over Wellington..

Next...Saturday night, 9pm, The Sox meet the Kitchener Outlaws who had
eliminated the Palermo/Hammer 5 - 4 in the 5 pm game. Wellington
scores single runs in the 2nd, and 3rd, 2 in the 5th and 1 in the 6th,
to beat Kitchener 5 - 1..Jim Culling, Scott Walls and Ryan Fisk had
the RBIs for the Sox, .....Kevin Buckley RBI'd Matt Stagg in the 2nd
for the Outlaws only run...Mel Ross picked up the win for the Sox.

Sunday 10 am....The Toronto Gators again, and this time a 8 - 0 win for
the Sox. Todd Uhrig went 6 innings for the win, 9 k's and allowed
Toronto 3 hits. The Sox picked up 11 hits, scored 8 runs. 3 RBI's for
Aaron Small (2 for 4) ,and 2 RBIs for Jeremy Creeden, Scott Walls had
2 triples, (2 for 3) and Julio Guzman was 2 for2.

Sunday 12 noon...and the Cobourg Force, last years OASA Champs. Cobourg
was knocked out of the winners bracket by the Cubs on Saturday
evening...6 - 3...and had to meet and beat the Wellington Sox if they
wanted a repeat of the OASA crown.

Cobourg opened up the offence immediately, scoring 3 runs in the
first, a lead off homer by Dave Brownhill, a 3B from Jody Schnarr, a
RBI double from Craig Buttar, and a sacrifice fly from Scott
LeBlanc...For Wellington in the bottom of the 1st...Ryan Fisk a two
bagger followed by a 2 run homer from Jim Culling, ......3 - 2 Cobourg,
after one.....

Second inning, Trevor Seip brought in Scott Walls who reached 1st on a
walk, moved to 2nd on a pass ball, and scored on Seip's
single.....end of 2, score tied at 3..

Top of the 3rd, Jodie Schnarr at 3rd, on a walk and error, scored on a
hit to first by Scott Leblanc. Bottom of the 3rd...Jeremy Creedon at
2nd base was scored with a Scott Walls single. 4 - 4 after 3 innings....

4th inning, 3 up 3 down for both,

5th...4 up, 3 down, 3 up 3 down,

6th top, Cobourg scores 3, Gary Manley, walk, Sammy Forbes double, RBI
Jason Hoch, and Mike Crawford scores on a Sox error and the Force is up
7 - 4

Bottom 6th..Sox score their 3 first batters, Curtis Cornelios, Scott
Walls and Todd Uhrig, Todd has 2 RBIs and scores on an error..after 6
complete..7 - 7

In the 7th Cobourg manages one hit, Craig Buttar. 1 hit, 1 left
on base and the Sox 4th, 5th and 6th batters are due up....Jermey
Creeden reaches on an error, Curtis Cornelios safe on first, fielders
choice, Creeden out, and Scott Walls, full count, hits safely to score
Cornelios and win the game...Mel Ross gets the win...in relief of
Nick Goetz who went 4 innings for the Sox.

The Wellington Sox now faced the KW Cubs rested and waiting. For the
Sox, 3rd game of the day, the Cubs last game was Saturday night, the
6 - 3 win over Cobourg

The Sox were home team, won on the flip. The Cubs opened up with 2
runs in the first...Bob Gillow and Adam Hiller for the Cubs...Gillow
again in the 6th and Brad Thomson, 6 innings in and the Cubs are up 4
- 0....7th inning Travis Hofstetter, triple, and scored on Dan
Mitchells single...

The Sox were able to score one run in the bottom of the 7th...Aaron
Small doubled, one out, and Jim Culling, a sacrifice to right scored
Small, a fly ball to left, Grant Baechler under it and the Cubs have
the Great Lakes Championship for 2011

Cubs 5 runs on 5 hits, and Scott Wagar with 13 strike outs picked up
the win. He allowed one hit in the championship game.


ISC QUALIFIERS

This years ISC World Tournament will be held in the Quad Cities,
located in Illinois and Iowa. 46 teams have qualified to play and a
load of them have played at the many ISC qualifiers played in Ontario
this past year. Along with the 13 Ontario teams that qualified,
fastpitch fans will have seen the Midland Mich. Explorers, Ashland Ohio
Stock Pak, New York's NY/Chicago in local tournaments against Ontario's
finest fastpitch clubs.

Ontario's 13 teams are the biggest group in this annual tournament... 7
from Iowa, 3 from Illinois and 1, the host Quad Cities, borders both
states. California sends 5, and Wisconsin 4...

Jarvis Ontario, the defending ISC Champions are ranked #1, (New
York/Chicago may have something to say about that), 6 of the 13
Ontario teams are out of the South Perth League. We have the recently
crowned OASA intermediate champs the KW Cubs ranked at #15, Shakespeare
Falcons #17, Wellington Sox, top team in league play, and OASA finalists
are at #21, the Elmira Expos at #26, Hickson Reds #30, Mitchell
Mets #33 ..

Owen Sound Verge Selects will be in the hunt, bringing a great 100%
"made in Ontario" team to Quad Cities. The Selects are ranked #11.
They have placed high in every tournament this summer, and have just
won the OASA Senior title in New Dundee this past weekend. They host
the Canadians later this month.

Other Ontario clubs include the Tri-County Sweaburg Crush, (#25) and
over in the St Thomas and District league #18 Alvinston Indians. The
Toronto Gators,( #27), Wyevale Tribe (#13) and the Cobourg Force, 3rd
in the OASAs (#29)

In the "over 50 division" Legends tournament....Cobourg Force is
competing as is Stoney Creek...that begins on Aug 18th to 20th..

A lot of the local fastball fans are already on the trek to
Illinois. The journey began last weekend in Erie, then on to South
Bend this weekend for the ASA's and then to Quad Cities for the
ISCs...where they will be joined by many more SWOntario fastpitch fans.

MORE MINOR CLASSIFICATION Championships...

The OASA Squirt Championships will be played in Virgil Ontario this
weekend.. just outside of beautiful Niagara On the Lake.

Teams from Belleville, Cobourg, Walkerton, New Hamburg, Tavistock,
Kitchener-Waterloo, Springbrook, Stouffville, Caledonia, Napanee,
Ennismore and the host centre Niagara-on-the-Lake...will be competing.
There are only two of those towns that I haven't visited this
summer....Caledonia and Ennismore...

Games are at the Meridian Credit Union Arena in Virgil, and start at 9
am. Drop in and see the future of fastball, and say hello to Mike
Goodridge, tournament chair.
