Both Ralph his father and Gord his brother threw out a ceremonial fist pitch . In the only game played following the ceremony , the defending champions the Sudbury North Stars scored early and often n on their way to an easy 11-1- victory over the North Shore River Dawgs called after five innings because of the 7 run mercy rule . Pitou Paquette of the North Stars and Casey Abitong of the River Dawgs were named game MVP’s

John Ainslie goes the distance in  4 hitting his former mates and also  picks up five strike outs . PLAYOFF ACTION
Quarter finals get underway Sunday morning in cloudy wet weather with a slight drizzle coming down throughout the first match up . In that quarter final one underway at 8 AM , the always strong playoff team the North Shore River Dawgs (5th seeded) take on the Pickerel River Cardinals(4th seeded) . The River Dawgs take an early 3-0 lead after  three innings then cruise to a  10-2 trouncing of the Cardinals . Once again young Casey Abitong comes through with an excellent performance giving up but 5 hits and striking out 8 batters .Heinkle Espanosa continues his hot bat going 3 for 4 including one double . I guess the “Sham” wanted to shine on us as the sun comes out for the quarter and stays around for the rest of the day .In this quarter the 6th seeded Parry Island Hawks take on the 3rd seeded Swick Hounds of Garson . Behind John Ainslie’s find pitching the Hounds defeat the Hawks 6-3 . Ainslie gave up 6 hits and struck out 5 .Once again Ainslie helped his cause by going 2 for 3 (double) .
Its on with semis now . In semi one the 3rd seeded Swick Hounds of Garson are taking on their arch rivals the Sudbury North Stars . The surprising Hounds who’ve been hot in league play and  league playoff action since late July continue to show their sponk here . It’s a tense game with the Hounds up by one (4-3) after four frames). They increased that by four runs with a 7-3 lead in the top of the fifth . The North Stars score 2 but still trail 7-5 . In the bottom of the seventh with one out  ,  short stop Steve Sabourin hits a single to left field followed by a costly error by the left fielder bringing two runs to tie the contest . Next Ben Bast hits a clutch base hit followed by Mike Cain’s deep sacrifice fly out to center field which brings in Bast for the winning run .The North Stars win a comback 8-7 .Brad Matheson goes the distance giving up 9 hits and fanning one batter .Brad Matheson helps his own cause going 3 for 4 including a triple with teammate Chad St Cyr hitting a two run shot to right field . In semi final two it’s a pitching duel throughout with young Casey Abitong of the River Dawgs taking on veteran legend Frank Cox of the Combat Chill . Both pitchers did not disappoint the large crowd on hand as they combined to give up 10 (4 hits against Cox and 6 hits against Abitong ) . The Combat Chill score one run in the 2nd and one run in the fifth and hold for an exciting climactic 2-1 victory . Cox goes the distance to go 3-0 in the tournament  .He fans   a whopping 19 batters for now a total of 42 in three outing . Pierre Legros led the way for the Combat Chill going 2 for 4 .

CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

It seems fitting that the tournament defending champions  would face the Tri Town Combat Chill in the championship final .  Here again you have a titanic struggle as Frank Cox will face Jody “Sweed” Dalvick for all the marbles . Both veteran pitchers say they are only pitching because of their idol and fallen friend  Brad “The Sham “ Rienguette who lost his long courageous battle to liver/pancreatic cancer two years ago . This tournament has taken on a second aspect that of honoring Brad . On with the game . The game remains scoreless for the first five innings and we could not expect anything less . In those five inning both pitchers face a total amount of 18 batters  with only six batters reaching base , four by the Combat and two by the North Stars . In the bottom of the sixth frame a scoreless game , the first batter for the Combat Walter Jr Tobobundung reaches base on a double followed by a single from Craig Brown that scores Tobobundung Next the short stop Lauzon strikes out then as true clutch hitter on top of being a masterful pitcher Cox  brings in a second run on his single . In the top of the seventh Cox goes to work and strikes out the side giving the Tri Towm Combat Chill the championship . In this contest Frank Cox struck out 13 batters to give him 55 for the weekend in his 4 outings . He also finished with an astounding ERA of  0,47 . His counterpart Dalvick picked up 4 strike outs . The members of the championship team are Walter Jr Tobodundung ,Craig Brown , Gilles Lauzon , Frank Cox , Robbie Edwards , Pierre Legros , Mike Ouchar , Dana Loach , Adam Judge and Jason Jibb . The top hitter for the tournament was Corey Farmer of the Swick Hounds of Garson hitting a superb 857 .The top pitcher and no surprise here was Frank Cox of the Tri Town Combat Chill  going a perfect 4-0 , gave up a total of 10 hits (2,5 per game) , struck out a total of 55 (13,75 per game or 2,37 per inning  .
