RICK McDONALD MEMORIAL FASTBALL LEAGUE

THE SUDBURY NORTH STARS ROAR BACK TO TAKE A 2-1 LEAD IN THE FINALS

Game three of the best of five league championship finals was played Thursday night at the Lorne Brady Memorial Park in Garson . After a lackluster effort on Wednesday night , the true veterans came up with their best effort in three games as they trounced the Pickerel River Cardinals 10-3 and now are on the brink of capturing their fifth league title in six years . The game staid close for a few innings but the defending champions broke through with three runs in the bottom of the third and did even better in the bottom of the sixth frame scoring 5 runs where the game was called because of the seven run mercy rule . Rookie Brad Matheson (0-1) started for the North Stars but was relieved in the 3rd inning by veteran John Ainslie (5-2) who won his fifth game of the playoffs in relief . Both pitchers combined to give up 7 hits , strike out 5 batters  and issue 4 base on balls . The Cardinals went with rookie Chris Vanvelkenburg (0-2) to start  the game and he took the loss , his second of the playoffs before being relieved by Jonathan Contin (3-1) in the sixth who in turn was relieved by Percy Tobobundung (0-0) in the same frame because of injury . All three pitchers combined to give up 7 hits , fan 12 batters and issue 2 base on balls . The major demise of the Cardinals was committing  4 costly fielding errors all in the sixth inning . Chad St Cyr led the way for the North Stars hitting 2 for 4 including a three run bomb to right center field in the sixth inning  while Percy Tobobundung and Pat Brennan went 2 for 3  in a losing cause for the Cardinals . The Cardinals will now have their backs to the wall next Wednesday September the 7th in Whitefish Lake at 9 PM when they face elimination in these league finals ..
