Canada defeats Mexico at XVI Pan American Games

(Guadalajara, Mexico) The Canadian Women's National Team improved their record to 4-1 at the Pan American Games in Mexico with an 8-1 five inning run-rule win over host country Mexico.

In front of an energetic crowd, Canada got on the board with four runs in the bottom of the first. With one out, Joey Lye (Toronto, ON) lined a double to left and moved to third on a Jennifer Yee (North Delta, BC) single to right. After Mexico got the second out, Kelsey Haberl (Burnaby, BC) walked and Jennifer Salling (Port Coquitlam, BC) drew a second walk to score Lye for Canada's first run. With two out and the bases loaded, Megan Timpf (Port Dover, ON) hit a long fly ball to centre that was dropped and allowed all three Canadian base runners to score and put Canada up 4-0.

After scoreless second and third innings, Canada added one more in the bottom of the fourth as Salling hit a two out triple and Megan Timpf was hit by a pitch. The Mexico pitcher threw a wild pitch allowing Salling to score. Mexico got one back in the top of the fifth when they took advantage of a Canadian error and one hit before Canada shut the door with two runners on base. Sarah Phillips (Mississauga, ON) got hit by a one hopper in the knee and had to be taken out with one out. Jenna Caira (Toronto, ON) came in and shut down Mexico.

In the bottom of the fifth, Canada was able to close the game out by scoring three times to earn the 8-1 win. Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC) opened the inning with a single. Joey Lye was safe on an error as she laid down a nice drag bunt that was dropped by the Mexican second baseman. Matthews scored on a passed ball then Jennifer Yee walked and both she and Lye were moved over to second and third on a sacrifice bunt Kaleigh Rafter (Guelph, ON). Kelsey Haberl singled to right to score Lye and Salling then drilled a two strike pitch up the middle to score Haberl to end the game.

Both teams managed only five hits with Sarah Phillips picking up the win by going four and one third innings and Jenna Caira came in relief to shut the door on a possible Mexico rally.

Canada (4-1) plays the undefeated United States (5-0), who defeated Cuba 3-0 and Puerto Rico 4-1 yesterday, at 2:00pm EDT this afternoon.
