Canada bounces back with big win over Argentina at Pan American Games

(Guadalajara, Mexico) Canada's Women's Softball Team survived the quick twelve-hour turnaround from their game with Cuba last night and scored a decisive 11-0 four inning win over Argentina to improve their record to 3-1. Canada scored in all three of their at-bats, including eight runs in the third inning for their run-rule win.

Ashley Lanz (Winnipeg, MB) picked up the win in the pitcher's circle for Canada, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out six. Canada banged out eight hits with Heather Ebert (Rosthern, SK) leading Canada's bats with two hits and an RBI, while Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC) tripled and knocked in three runs and Jennifer Salling (Port Coquitlam, BC) added a single and drew two walks.

In the first, Canada scored once as Victoria Hayward (Toronto, ON) singled, Jennifer Yee (North Delta, BC) was safe on an error, and Salling walked to load the bases. Kelsey Haberl (Burnaby, BC) drew another walk to score Hayward, but Joey Lye (Toronto, ON) hit into an inning-ending double play. In the second, Canada scored twice when Erin Cumpstone (Saskatoon, SK) reached on an error, Danielle Lopez (Barrie, ON) lined a single to right and Matthews drilled a triple to left center field to drive in both runs.

In the third, Canada put the game away by scoring eight runs. Lye was safe on another error by Argentina to lead the inning off. Heather Ebert singled to center and Lopez drew a walk to load the bases before Matthews picked up her third RBI after being hit with a pitch. Pinch hitter Jill Russell (London, ON) singled up the middle to drive in Canada's fifth run, followed by Yee being hit by another pitch and knocking in another run. Salling then singled though the right side of the infield to score two, and then pinch hitter Brittany Hicks (Dundas, ON) got her first hit as a National Team player, drilling a shot up the middle to drive in two more runs. Ebert got her second hit of the game and another RBI to round out the scoring.

Team Canada (3-1) will face the host country Mexico (0-3) tonight at 9:00pm EDT.
