Owen Sound Senior Selects Leave

The Owen Sound Senior Selects Fastball team is taking a leave of absence for the 2012 season.

Selects President Bill Simpson confirmed the departure this morning noting the Senior level of the Selects fastball program will take the year to reassess and potentially re-organize their operation.

The Selects operate various fastball clubs in Owen Sound ranging from Minor Softball to Junior and, over the past several years, they have also operated a Senior program.

In fact, the Senior Selects were the host team for the Canadian Men's Championship Tournament at Duncan McLellan Park which was staged last summer

Simpson, a lifetime participant in the sport, admits the decision was a difficult one to reach, one that took a lot of the pleasure out of the Christmas season as he considered the move.

He says he needed firm commitments in several areas of the operation and those commitments were tentative, at best.

Simpson stresses the Owen Sound Brick Brothers Volkswagen Junior Selects program is prepared for 2012

Having won the Ontario Championship the past three years, Owen Sound hopes to capture the National Championship this summer when the Canadian Juniors are hosted in Owen Sound.

Owen Sound Senior Selects Cease Operations for the 2012 Season

It is with regret and an empty feeling that we announce that the Owen Sound Verge Selects will be ceasing operations for the upcoming 2012 fastball season. A decision was recently made after many months of trying to put needed financial pieces in place. The decision was not easy but an unfortunate reality. This is not the end of the Senior program in Owen Sound as we hope to have a team back for the 2013 season.

This will be the second time since 1964 that there will not be a Senior Team in Owen Sound. The other shut down was after the 2003 season in which the team was crowned Canadian Champions. The team was rebuilt after a five year absence, and recently played host to the Senior Canadians again this past August.

A great number of players have worn an Owen Sound Jersey in just shy of 50 years and we want the tradition to continue. All players were made aware in recent days of the possibility of this decision being made. They have all been very supportive and it is greatly appreciated.

We are grateful for all of our community support and fan base over the years. We look forward to seeing you again in 2013.

This decision does not affect our Junior program which is hosting the 2012 Junior Canadians.

Yours in fastball
Jamie Simpson
