McMann, Albath and Hagan named Durham College Athletes of the Year

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College athletic department held the 42nd annual Athletic Banquet Thursday night at the General W. Sikorski Polish Veterans Association Hall in Oshawa.

Dave McMann (Elmvale, Ont.) of the men’s volleyball team took home the William Avery male athlete of the year award while Tiffany Albath (
Bad Marienberg, Germany) of the women’s golf team and Janna Hagan (Sherwood Park, Alta.) of the women’s fastball team were named the female athletes of the year.

McMann had a record breaking season in his final year with the men’s volleyball program. The Elmvale native broke the OCAA career blocking record as he recorded 206 career blocks, passing Corey Cole of St. Clair College on the final play of the Lords regular season finale. He also broke the single season record for blocks with 83 this season. McMann led the Lords to a top five finish at provincials and was named an OCAA all-star.

McMann is the first Durham College volleyball player to win the William Avery male athlete of the year award since Adam Schiedel (2004-05).

Hagan, a third year outfielder with the women’s fastball team was named the 2011 OCAA player of the year while leading the Lords to an OCAA championship and a national bronze medal. She was the league’s top hitter (.577 average) while being named an OCAA and national championship all-star..

Albath, a second year member of the women’s golf team won the OCAA individual golf title and a CCAA individual bronze medal on the links. Paired up with teammate Kayleigh Kraemer, the Lords also won the OCAA and CCAA team titles for the second straight season.  Albath also finished fifth at the RCGA College/University golf championship.
This marks the second straight year that a women’s golfer and fastball player have won the athlete of the year awards, as Kayleigh Kraemer (golf) and Erin Dewey (fastball) were the 2010-11 recipients.

It was a night of celebration as the college took some time to look back and reflect on another successful year. There were plenty of special presentations made over the course of the evening including honoring the achievements of all of the student-athletes.

Other big winners on the night included Jenna Dupuis (Whitby, Ont.) of the women’s fastball team and Bradley Van Hartingsveldt (Newcastle, Ont.) of the men’s volleyball team who took home the freshman athlete of the year awards. Both student-athletes won the OCAA rookie of the year award in their respective sports.

The Bonnie Ginter-Brown Leadership Award is annually presented to the overall male and female athletes who best exemplify outstanding leadership in the pursuit of excellence. This year’s honour went to a pair of basketball seniors as Erin Emery (North Bay, Ont.) and Tyler McGarrity (Ajax, Ont.) were named the recipients. This is the second straight year Emery has earned the prestigious award.

The baseball team was named the overall team of the year. The Lords won their first CIBA National Championship title in 20 years this fall, beating Humber College 6-1 in the all-Ontario final. Head coach Sam Dempster also earned his 300th career victory.
