OASA U18 Midget Eliminations in New Dundee

Nothing Midget about the ball tournament in New Dundee this past
weekend...nothing midget about some of the scores, nothing small about
some of the upsets. Big sunshine, big skies, and big portions at the
food booth, ...Big outfields with several, no make that many
in-the-park home runs. Big wins for some teams. Big disappointments for
several teams all in the hunt for the Ontario Midget A title.

Napanee beat Caledonia in a great title game Sunday afternoon. But
before they met the Express in the final, Caledonia had to beat New
Hamburg in the semi at 1pm and they did that in the 4th inning. No
score for either squad in the home half of the 4th. Caledonia at bat,
leading off the inning, short stop Zack McCarthey hits a solo homer for
the Royals. Two batters out followed, 1st baseman Thomas Dowling on
with an error, steals 2nd, and Taylor Shipp scores him with a single.
That brings Brendan Banner to the plate, another error and two on base
for 9th batter Chris Weston. Weston goes long to the gap in centre -
left field, scoring Banner and Dowling and Weston is out at the
plate, score it a triple, 2 RBIs, a cloud of dust and 7 - 6 - 2 out at
the plate. Calendonia up 4 - 0.

New Hamburg's Nick Lichti singles in the top of the 5th to get the
Heat's inning off to a good start. Cody Werner with one out singles and
scores Lichti. Two out and a triple for Alex Dumais followed by a
strike out by Cobourg's Mitch Green and that is all New Hamburg could
score. Three up and three down in the 6th and 7th and Caledonia is on
to the final against Napanee.

Caledonia opened the game with a run in the first...a Napanee error left
Chris Weston at 2nd with one out. Zach McCarthey single, scoring Weston.

Top of the second inning for Napanee a single, Sloan Creighton, a
double Mike Jordan, a single Adam Near scores two, then 2 outs, a walk
to lead off hitter Cole Bolton, and a RBI single for Brett Irwin put the
Express on top...to stay....

2 outs in the 3rd....Jordon hits a solo home run. In the 4th Bolton
triples for Napanee and two batters later
Taylor Brown brings him home on another triple. Napanee up 5 - 1 after
4 1/2

Two out for New Hamburg in the home half of the 5th, Thomas Dowling hits
a solo homer....

The teams exchanged runs in the 6th..Napanee on a Bolton double and
Brett irwin's single gave the Express a 6 - 3 lead..Caledonia picked up
a run in the bottom of the 6th from Chris Honwood..

3 up, 3 out for each team in the 7th...and Napanee Express pick up the
OASA U18 "A" title.

Here are some of the scores...

Domville led off with a 6 - 2 win over Alvinston
then lost 10 - 3 to New Hamburg and 8 - 3 to Fullerton

Highgate over KW Kolts 12 - 6, then lost to Cobourg 8 - 6 and a win over
Pickering 8 - 1
Highgate then beat Domville and met Caledonia...a loss of 8 - 0 put out
Highgate.

Cobourg defeated Milverton 7 - 5 in their opener,
Tavistock beat Saugeen 19 - 1, Napanee opened with a 9 - 2 win over
Fullerton
and Caledonia 12 - 7 over Pickering.

Owen Sound had an opening bye, and lost to Caledonia in their first
game 8 - 4
Napanee defeated Tavistock 9 - 3

In the Elimination Bracket, Fullerton took out Saugeen 6 - 2
and KW over Milverton 4 - 3, then KW 6 - 4 over Tavistock,
Alvinston over Owen Sound 5 - 4
and then a football game, KW 21 Alvinston 12
Milverton, Tavistock, Owen Sound, Alvinston all gone...

Up on the winners bracket, New Hamburg knocked Cobourg to the
Elimination bracket 7 - 2
and Napanee knocked down Caledonia 7 - 0 followed by Napanee over New
Hamburg, taking
Napanee to the final...

Sunday morning, Elimination Bracket...

Cobourg 8 - 3 over KW,
Caledonia 8 - 0 over Highgate...

Caledonia 8 - 1 over Cobourg...
Caledonia 4 - 1 over New Hamburg

and the final...6 -4 Napanee...

Good weekend for fastball in New Dundee...the KW Cubs did a great job
on planning and execution on this tournament. It had the feel of a good
men's tournament, lots of action, lots of baserunners lots of extra
base hits, lots of great ball players, lots of good teams and some good
coachers leading the way and the biggest help to a well run
tournament...clear skies and no rain.... Cubs did a great job on the
food, with the combination of the Village Caterer and the Optimist Club
Food booth, the OASA kept the games rolling along, and the Blue Crew did
an outstanding job between the lines. Thanks also to the scorers and
announcing crew, another great job keeping the fans informed and the
stats clean, neat and tidy.

SCORING TIP OF THE WEEK

It happens often in the younger levels, sometimes a coach is busy doing
what coaches do...and they forget some of the details...there is a lot
happening with some teams that don't have a lot of tournament
experience. This happened to me during one of the games I was scoring
this weekend...

Team Green and Team Yellow are rolling along, score about 4 - 2, in the
elimination bracket, lots of hits, lots of baserunners, hot Saturday
afternoon, some poor defence, some poor attitude from some of the
players, and Team Yellow is up to bat...one out....I have #21 coming
to bat on my scorecard, he had been up previously, and now with a
runner on base, and # 22 the catcher on deck I am expecting to see #21
walking to the plate..... but who walks up to the plate...not #21...but
# 9...same size kid as #21, swings from the right side of the plate as
#21 but #9 on the sweater...I look down at my scorecard, seeing if #9
is batting out of order, but he is not on the starting line
up....but there he is on the bottom of the line - up card...good old #
9..is listed as a sub...

i asked my partner Don Wells if the umpire had come over and given us a
change for the Yellow Team...nope...no change...I looked at the umpire,
I looked at the Yellow bench, no eye contact, no one looking at me,
waving a finger or a lineup card...maybe #21 is upset at being DHd and
the coach is dealing with that...

What to do...Do I announce #21s name and see if there is a reaction
from someone..

Do I announce #9s name and see what happens...

What do i do??????

Think that over and let me tell you later what I did...

TAVISTOCK - Cephas Roth - July 12th to the 15th

Twelve great teams head over to Tavistock and the Cephas Roth

Tavistock always sets up well. At New Dundee this past weekend, i spoke
to a few parents of the Tavi U18 team and they promised us a good
weekend at the park. Good teams, good diamonds, lots of cold drinks
and hot food, some great entertainment, a great umpire crew, this
should be a good show...make your way over and enjoy some good
fastpitch softball...Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday.....

TAVISTOCK SCHEDULE AND RESULTS PAGE

INNERKIP - ISC Under 21

The ISC U21 is the weekend after Tavistock. Teams will be getting info
on that schedule in a day or two from Joe Todd and Blair Setford.

THE GREAT LAKES - OASA Championship - July 20 21 and 22nd

Jarvis is hosting the OASA Championship this year. There are 8 teams
including the KW Cubs and the Kitchener Outlaws, the Scarborough Force,
Niagara Snappers, the host club Jarvis, plus 3 more that I failed to
write down when I was talking to Brad at the U18 in New Dundee. Too
busy enjoying some good beef on a bun and some great ball games to be
paying 100 % attention.

If you come out to Tavistock this weekend, you will be able to get the
information first hand, otherwise i will be sending out a lineup and
schedule next week.

See you in Tavi...

Dennis

PS...what did I do with good old #9 of the yellow team.....

I didn't do anything.....I let it happen...I did not get proactive....I
recorded what happened....I didn't announce #21 at bat...I didn't
announce #9 at bat...I started to look for the switch for the
microphone, and checked the scoresheet for missing RBIs, looked for the
pencil that I thought I had dropped on the ground, waited for the umpire
to turn to me and tell me something, or an opposing coach to come to
the front of the dugout with a smile on his face and hope in his heart,
and when good old #9 got his hit...I said ..."with one out, coming to
bat is #22 the catcher ........."

There are consequences to a player not entering the game properly.. that
is the call of the coach, and the ruling of the umpire....

If the play occurs and no one objects, record the play...record that #9
entered the game, record that he got a base hit or was struck out,
hit a home run...it is up to the offended coach to make an issue of the
incorrect entry.

Stay calm and carry on

We are to record the play not partake in the play

We only take changes from the umpire.

We are witnesses and reporters.
