Canada powers past New Zealand at ISF XIII Women's World Championship

(Whitehorse, YK) The Canadian Women`s National Team continued to swing the bats well at the ISF XIII Women's World Championship, powering past New Zealand by a score of 12-1 in five innings. Jocelyn Cater (Delta, BC) pitched five solid innings to limit the Kiwi attack, while Canada pounded out 12 hits to improve its record to 4-1.

Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC) wasted no time getting Canada on the board, depositing the first pitch of the game over the fence and into the stands in right field. Cater allowed a single but struck out the side to end the first inning. The red and white then added two runs to their lead in the top of the second. Jenny Gilbert (Saskatoon, SK) and Carey-Leigh Thomas (Ohsweken, ON) each earned one-out walks before Natalie Wideman (Mississauga, ON) drove a pitch into left field to score Gilbert. After a fielder's choice for the second out and a great bunt single by Matthews loaded the bases, Caitlin Lever (Buffalo, NY) also dropped a bunt single to score the third run of the game.

Team Canada kept the offence rolling in the third. Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB) drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second. Gilbert then hit a single to score Lawrick from second. Thomas reached base on a fielder's choice that was bobbled by the second baseman, as both runners were safe. Wideman then delivered a double to left field to score Gilbert, and after a hit by pitch loaded the bases, Matthews singled up the middle to score two more runs, giving Canada a 7-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning, New Zealand was able to load the bases on a hit and two walks, but Cater was able to get out of it unscathed with two big strikeouts.

After going down in order in the fourth, Canada added to its big lead with five runs in the fifth. Thomas started the inning with a walk but was retired at second on a fielder's choice by Wideman. A single by Victoria Hayward (Toronto, ON) moved Wideman over to second, and Matthews drove her in with a single. Lever followed with a double to the left-center field gap to score two more runs, and later scored on a two-run homerun by Lawrick, giving Canada the big 12-0 lead.

New Zealand showed some resiliency by getting two runners on base with a single and an error, and was able to score a run on a single up the middle. Cater then allowed a walk to load the bases with no outs, but followed that with two strikeouts and induced a fly ball on the infield to end the game.

Cater allowed one run on four hits and four walk, and struck out nine batters in five innings for Team Canada. Matthews led the way offensively, going three-for-four with a homerun and four runs batted in. Lever added two hits and three RBIs, while Wideman went two-for-three with two RBIs and three runs scored. Lawrick added a two-run homerun, with other hits going to Gilbert, Rafter and Hayward.
