Lords fair better outside against Monroe

Women’s Fastball: Durham and Monroe split their four game weekend series 2-2

ROCHESTER, NY – Outdoor play faired better for the Durham College women’s fastball team as they won both of their games against Monroe College on Sunday afternoon.

On Saturday, the teams were forced to play indoors because of the inclement weather. Playing in Monroe’s indoor field house, the home team picked up two wins over the Lords.

“It was a much different team today,â€Â said Lords head coach Jim Nemish. “Playing indoors on Saturday was a unique experience for our team. I think we did a pretty good job of adjusting to the conditions, but it was nice to get outdoors today. Overall, today’s performance was much better but we still have areas to improve on as we move forward.â€Â

Game One – Monroe defeated Durham 1-0
Monroe picked up the first win of the weekend by a score of 1-0 in a pitchers’ duel. Lords freshman pitcher Lydia Kalbfleisch pitched five innings in her collegiate debut, allowing one unearned run on four hits. Kristine Miles came into the game in relief and pitched a scoreless inning.

Although the Lords had seven hits in the contest, the offence struggled to cash in any runs. Melissa Semeniuk went 2-for-4 in the game with a single and a double.

Game Two – Monroe defeated Durham 3-0
Monroe earned their second shutout of the day with a 3-0 victory over the Lords. Durham’s pitching staff and defence gave them a chance to win but the offence failed to produce any runs for the second straight game on the field turf.

Miles pitched three innings allowing three runs on nine hits. Kayla MacLean, who made her return to the Lords line-up, pitched four shutout innings while striking out seven Monroe batters.

Shannon Ferguson and Samantha Officer were the Lords top hitters with two singles apiece.

Game Three – Durham defeated Monroe 3-0
Durham’s fortunes changed on Sunday as they were on the right end of the scoreline as they defeated Monroe 3-0.

MacLean picked up the win for the Lords, allowing only one hit over five innings while recording nine strikeouts. Miles earned the save as she pitched two scoreless innings.

OCAA player of the year Janna Hagan had two singles in the win while Officer recorded a home run.

Game Four – Durham defeated Monroe 5-1
Kalbfleisch picked up the win for Durham giving up one hit while facing only 13 batters in four innings of work. The Lords freshman came into the game in relief of Miles who got the start.

Trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning, Durham managed to get on the board in a big way as they scored four runs.

Top hitters for Durham included Semeniuk who had two doubles with two RBIs and Ferguson who had two singles.
