Lords pull out a comeback win on opening day
OCAA Women’s Fastball: Durham defeated Humber 8-5
ETOBICOKE, Ont. – The Durham College women’s fastball team spoiled the Humber Hawks home opener as they earned an 8-5 victory on Wednesday night.
“It was a good win to start the season,” said Lords head coach Jim Nemish. “To battle back after giving up a four run lead shows that we have a lot of heart. However, we still need to be sharper on a lot of areas of our game. We are young and progressing and will get better the more games we play as a team.”
Durham started off quickly with four runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by Lydia Kalbfeish (Moorefield, Ont.) driving two runs in on a single.
After pitching a perfect first inning, starting pitcher Kristine Miles (Whitby, Ont.) ran into some trouble as Durham allowed five runs over the next two innings which included four defensive errors.
Trailing 5-4, Durham would get back on the board as they scored four runs on four hits in the sixth inning. With one out in the inning, team captain Shannon Ferguson (Brockville, Ont.) hit a two-run single to give the Lords a four run lead.
Kalbfeisch, who came into the game in relief in the third inning, allowed one run in the seventh inning and picked up her first win in the OCAA. The freshman shut down the Hawks offence as she pitched 4.1 innings, allowing one run on two hits.
Durham has now won five straight games on opening day.
The Lords are 1-0 to start the year and will host three games at home this weekend. Durham’s home opener in on Friday, September 14 against the Seneca Sting. Game time for minor softball night is 6/8 p.m.
