WELLINGTON SOX WIN THE SOUTH PERTH CHAMPIONSHIP

The Wellington Sox (15 -5) took the short route to the South Perth Championship this past weekend in Milverton.  The Sox opened with a win 7 - 3 over Hickson Reds (7 -11) ..then 10 - 3 over Sebringville (8 -12).  They met and defeated the South Perth regular season champs the Elmira Expos (16 - 4)  by 5 - 3, sending the Expos to the losers bracket.

Elmira opened with a win over the host team Milverton AW Millwrights (7 -13)  4 - 3, then beat Shakespeare Falcons (11-9)  7 - 3.

After the loss to the Sox, the Expos met the Falcons in the lower bracket and beat them again, this time 6 - 4 to eliminate Shakespeare and set up the championship game against Wellington.

Expos home game, Wellington got off to a quick start with 3 runs in the top of the 1st...the Expos responded with 3 of their own in the bottom of the 1st.,  Ryan Fisk, Darren Cunningham, Jeremy Creeden for the Sox, Todd Uhrig credited with 2 RBIs, ..for  the Expos, Derek Martin, single, Dan Martin 2B, and a HR for Trevor Beatson.

In the 3rd Wellington picked up 3 more runs...Todd Swift singled, Todd Urhig, 2 more RBIs with a homer, the Scott Walls doubled and Jeff Detta tripled to score Walls..

Todd Uhrig replaced Nic Goetz for the Sox final two innings, allowed 3 hits, stranding Halstead, Beatson and Josh Brohman, struck out 3, saving the win for Goetz.

The organizers did a great job  to keep  the games rolling, rain delays and schedule changes were handled well by the South Perth organizers....

The Wellington Sox started the season in first and almost made it post to post, but the Expos caught up an passed them to finish the season on top of the standings.  Congratulations to the Sox on a great recovery in the championship tournament. Nicely done.

MILDMAY METS WIN BLUEWATER LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP in Chepstow...

I spent a lot of time in my teen years driving from Mildmay to Port Elgin passing by Chepstow on my way.

I would close my dad's Esso Station in Mildmay,  around 10 pm and be able to  make it to  the Friday dance at the  Port Elgin Casino in 45 minutes.   Drove a black 56 Dodge, flat head 6 cylinder, 3 speed, with most of the fenders intact, and one window that rolled down, a radio that picked up WLS in Chicago...

So, when I heard that the Mildmay Mets defeated the Port Elgin Blue Devils at the Bluewater League championship in Chepstow...I celebrated for the Mets.... Big win....8 - 6....and the centre of the fastball universe shifted a little to the south..

The Mets were 13 - 7 in league play, 2nd place to Elmwood  with a 14-7 record in the Bluewater South Division and 4 1/2 ahead of Chepstow....

What happened to that game in hand? Hey,  all I'm saying is  that the Mildmay Mets might be in Ohsweken this weekend playing in the Ontario Challenge Cup if they had played that one game in hand..it might have been against Elmwood, and it might have put the Mets on top  of the South Division...and maybe Mildmay goes to Quad Cities, and maybe they get a good draw, and maybe they make the top  16...that's all I'm saying...

Their road to the championship included wins over Tara Merchants, Elmwood Smoke, Wiarton Nationals and the Blue Devils in the final...
