Durham’s offence explodes for 37 runs

HAMILTON, Ont. – The Durham College women’s fastball team combined to score 37 runs in their OCAA doubleheader against the Mohawk Mountaineers on Thursday night.



In game one, the Lords and Mountaineers 17-9 scoreline was six runs shy of the OCAA single game record for most runs scored by two teams (32 – Durham vs. St. Lawrence).



Five players for Durham had a multi-hit night in game one including Shannon Ferguson who went 4-for-5 with two RBI’s. Freshmen Sydney Kozuska and Samantha Officer each had three hits apiece while Melissa Semeniuk, Jessica Pike and Melissa Rodgers had two. Officer had a two run home run which was estimated at 270 feet. Semeniuk also displayed a lot of power as she blasted a double and triple off the fence.



Durham actually trailed 5-3, but the Lords scored seven runs in the top of the fourth to take a 10-5 lead. Mohawk would come back to narrow the lead to one run (10-9), but the Lords would add seven more runs including six in the seventh inning to win by a score of 17-9.



Kayla MacLean earned the win as she came into the game in relief of Lydia Kalbfleish. MacLean had six strikeouts and allowed two runs on three hits.



In game two, Kristine Miles shut down the Mountaineers offence as she allowed one run over five innings and recorded six strikeouts.



Melissa Semeniuk went 3-for-5 with two triples off the fence. Shannon Ferguson and Caitlyn Morton had three hits apiece while Samantha Officer recorded her second home run of the night. Sydney Kozuska, Janna Hagan, Kayla Worotniak had two singles each.



Durham played a much better defensive game this time giving up only one run and committing two errors.



Freshman Caitlyn Morton got her first start behind the plate and called a good game for Miles.



Durham opened the scoring with eight runs in the first, two in the second & third innings and then another eight in the fourth.

With the two wins, Durham improves to 4-0 to start the regular season while the Mountaineers fall to 0-5.


Durham will host the CAN-AM Classic from September 22-23 at Durham College Field.
