ALVINSTON -- St. Thomas Storm won their sixth St. Thomas and District Major Fastball League playoff championship with a 2-1 win over the Alvinston Indians on a cold Sunday evening in Alvinston.

St. Thomas sent Game 1 winner Ryan Cummings to the rubber and Alvinston countered with their Game 1 starter Kyle Crawford. The game proved to be a pitcher's duel.

Alvinston threatened in the first inning with leadoff hitter Joe Triest getting on base due to an error. He was sacrificed to second and Jeff Ingram later walked. But Cummings escaped harm by stranding both runners.

Veteran second baseman Troy Rick got the Storm on the board in the top of the second by hitting the first pitch of the inning for a huge HR.

St. Thomas would then load the bases, but Crawford wriggled out of the inning with two big strike outs.

The third inning proved to be the turning point.

After getting two quick outs, the game got a little more intense when Crawford hit Rick with a pitch. Chris Wismer followed with a walk and Aaron Gould got a clutch two-out RBI single that scored Rick for what proved to be the winning run. St. Thomas again left the bases loaded.

Crawford cruised after that inning, retiring the next 12 Storm hitters in order to keep his club in it.

Alvinston scored their only run in the fourth when, with two out, Chris Drew hit a ball over the head of the Storm right fielder for a triple and scored on an errant throw to third.

Cummings would surrender only one more hit over the final three innings. He was at his best in the bottom of the seventh when he was able to strike out the side to preserve the win. He finished with 11 Ks and gave up four hits and two bases on balls.

Crawford gave up three hits, had nine Ks and issued four bases on balls along with two hit batsmen.

Alex Chisholm chipped in with two hits for Alvinston while Aaron Gould had two hits for St. Thomas.

After losing Game 1 of the quarter-finals to Glencoe, St. Thomas won eight games in a row, hitting 15 home runs over that span.
