Tribe Results from Meaford, ON

Tribe took part in the tournament in Meaford this weekend, and finished second to Kit/Pho who beat the Tribe 1-0 in the final.  The Tribe won their first 4 games before getting upended by the Outlaws in the finals.

Game #1

Tribe – 3

Harold Sutherland – 0

WP – J Giffen (6IP-0ER-3H-14K)

LP – ??

Jason Giffen was pretty dominating in this one going the distance and shutting down Harold Sutherland while recording 14 strikeouts.  The Tribe bats started off slow, but put up 2 in the 5th and 1 in the 6th to make sure Giffen’s performance wasn’t wasted.

G McNabb 2-3 RBI

J Giffen 2-3 RBI

C Kelly 2-3 RBI

Game #2

Tribe – 4

Berkley – 3

WP G McNabb (5IP-3ER-4H-7K) in relief of J Giffen (2IP-0ER-2H-6K)

LP R Fawcette (4IP-2ER-3H-6K) in relief of Scott Sharton (3IP-0ER-2H-3K)

Tribe started off well in this one opening up a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, which was helped by a Berkley error.  Berkley rallied for 3 in the bottom of the 4th when Ryan Whitney laced a triple to the alley to clear the bases.  The Tribe tied the score in 6th when a Lapham Sac Fly scored G McNabb.  In the top of the 7th the Peterson hit a solo shot to centre to give the Tribe the lead.  In the bottom of the 7th a the leadoff hitter tried to stretch a double into a triple, but was gunned down from the wall in centre by J McNabb.  G McNabb shut the door from there.

G McNabb 2-4

D Drinkill 2-3

K Peterson 1-3 HR RBI

T Leonard, M Kelly, K Lapham RBI

Game #3

Tribe – 7

Durham Heat – 2

WP – G McNabb (3IP-1ER-1H-4K) Save J Giff (3IP-0ER-0H-9K)

LP – B Bricknell (6IP-4ER-11H-5K)

In the top of the first the Tribe again capitalized on a couple of miscues by the Durham Heat to put up 4 runs.  In the bottom of the 3rd inning with the score 5-1 the Heat scored a run capitalizing on 2 Tribe errors narrowing the gap to 3.  The Tribe then put up 2 in the 6th to seal the victory.  On the mound G McNabb got the win going the first 3 innings giving up only 1 hit and the 1ER.  Only blemish on McNabb’s resume was some control problems in the first when we walked the first 3 batters.  He got out of it nicely giving up only 1 run.  J Giffen came on in relief and struck out all 9 batters he faced to get the save.

M Kelly 4-4 3RBI

M Giffen 1-2

K Peterson 1-4 3RBI

D Drinkill RBI

Game #4 (Semi)

Tribe – 5

Kitchener Thunder – 4

WP – J Giffen (5IP-2ER-2H-12K) in relief of G McNabb(4IP-1ER-4H-3K)

LP – C Halstead (9IP-5ER-9H-9K)

In what turned out to be a very well played and exciting game, the Tribe scratched out a 5-4 9 inning victory over the Kitchener Thunder.  Again the Tribe struck early with 2 runs in the top of the 1st inning.  That lead held until Kitchener plated 2 runs of their own in the bottom of the 4th.  The game remained tied at 2 after 7, so it went to the 8th with the international rule in effect.  Both teams scored 1 in the 8th.  In the 9th the Tribe scored 2 runs on 3 straight singles, while Kitchener couldn’t push a 2nd run across in the bottom half.  On the mound for the Tribe, J Giffen got the win in relief of G McNabb.  Both pitched extremely well.

T Leonard 2-4 2 RBI

M Kelly 2-4 RBI

G McNabb 2-4

C Bell, M Lambie RBI

Game #5 (Final)

Kitchener Phoenix – 1

Tribe – 0

WP – M Ross (7IP-0ER-1H-5K)

LP – J Giffen (7IP-0ER-4H-8K)

C Bell 1-2

The Championship was another well played and exciting game.  Mel Ross and Jason Giffen hooked up in a superb pitching duel that saw the only run score on a ball that found it’s way into the dugout when it was jarred loose in a run down.  An unfortunate way to have the only run score, but Kitchener was the better team throughout the game.  Ross kept the Tribe hitters off balance all afternoon.  Giffen pitched extremely well in the loss really gutting out the last 3-4 innings.

In the end the Tribe sported a 4-1 record and played quite well all weekend.  The weather was exceptionally hot for the most part.  And as always the Tribe had fun, and competed hard.  Hats off to the Outlaws for a excellent tournament, and good luck at the TOC.

In other news Arthur beat the Thunder in the consolation final.  It was quite unfortunate that more teams didn’t make the playoffs.  With only 4 of 18 teams moving on, some good teams didn’t get a chance to ply their wares on Sunday.  Ottawa Team Easton, Owen Sound Crunch, and a few others had 2-1 records, and I thought deserved a shot on Sunday.  Luckily they didn’t have a 3-0 team not make it to the playoffs because it was a possibility.

As they say “No Rest for the Weary”.  The Tribe now takes on the Toanche Jr Eagles tonight, and Minesing on Thursday to round out the SRFL schedule.
