Record breaking night for Durham as they clinch the regular season pennant

OCAA Women’s Fastball
Game One: Durham defeated Seneca 19-1

Game Two: Durham defeated Seneca 18-0

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College women’s fastball team broke three OCAA single season team records on Monday night with a two-game sweep against the Seneca Sting.

Durham’s offence totaled 177 runs, 198 hits and 143 RBI’s in 15 games this season, which are all new OCAA records.

Melissa Semeniuk of Ajax, Ont. also etched her name in the record book as she recorded 31 hits this season, breaking the previous record of 25 set by Erin Dewey (Durham) and Shannon Glover (Mohawk). Semeniuk went 5-for-8 on the night bringing her season average to .543 on the season.

Durham earned wins of 19-1 and 18-0 over Seneca on a cold and rainy evening at Durham Field. Seneca was forced to go to the bullpen early as Lauren McLaughlin, who had pitched 11 of 13 games for the Sting this season, went out with an injury early in the first inning after being hit by a line drive.

Lydia Kalbfleisch and Kristina Miles earned the victories on the mound for Durham, combining to allow only seven hits throughout the doubleheader.

The Lords bats were on fire all night long as they had 34 hits in the two games. Every positional player in the Lords line-up (eleven in total) had at least one hit.

With the pair of victories, Durham finished the regular season with a 14-1 record, one game ahead of the Humber Hawks. The Lords have finished in first place in the OCAA women’s fastball regular season 15 out of the last 16 years.

The OCAA Championship is up next for the national silver medalists as it is set to take place at Seneca College from October 19-20, 2012. Durham will take on the hosting Sting in the first round.
