Canada Finished Third in Pool B with Win over Mexico at ISF Junior Men's World Championship

(Parana, Argentina) After a day off on Tuesday, the Canadian Junior Men`s National Team had another tough task as they took on Mexico with the winner wrapping up the preliminary round in third place in Pool B at the ISF IX Junior Men`s World Championship. Cole Bolton (Flinton, ON) had a single, a triple and an inside-the-park grand slam to drive in five runs as Team Canada powered past the Mexicans by a score of 10-6.

After going down in order in the first two innings, Canada got on the scoreboard first in the top of the third inning. Cody Anthony (Shubenacadie, NS) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, followed by back-to-back singles by Brett Larson (Irma, AB) and Taylor Brown (Centreville, OB) to load the bases with no outs. Bolton then singled to centerfield to score Anthony, followed by a sacrifice fly to right field by Michael Lamontagne (St-Charles-de- Bellechasse, QC). Canada scored their third run on a fielder's choice to give them a 3-0 lead.

Mexico did not waste any time coming back, scoring four runs in the bottom of the third with an RBI single followed by a three-run homerun to take a one run lead. Not to be outdone, Canada scored four runs of its own the following inning. After loading the bases on singles by Carson Soucy (Irma, AB) and Anthony and a walk by Brown, Bolton stepped up and hit and inside-the-park grand slam with two outs to give Canada a 7-4 lead.

Canada would add two more runs to that lead in the fifth. Adam Stuck (Owen Sound, ON) was hit by a pitch followed by a walk by Steven Normand (Calgary, AB), and an error by the third baseman allowed Stuck to score from second. Larson later hit an RBI single to increase the lead to 9-4. The following inning, Bolton hit a one-out triple to centerfield and scored on a single by Lamontagne for another insurance run. Mexico made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh, as they scored a run on a solo homerun and then loaded the bases with two outs. The next batter was hit by a pitch to score another run, but a groundout to third base ended the game.

Michael Lagace-Roote (New Hamburg, ON) started the game in the pitcher's circle for Canada, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Normand came on in relief in the bottom of the fourth and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks, striking out two. Ty Sebastian (Brussels, ON) retired the last batter to preserve the win. Offensively, Bolton led the way with three hits and five runs batted in, while Larson added two singles and an RBI. Lamontagne, Soucy, Anthony and Brown rounded out the hits.

Box Score: Canada 10 vs. Mexico 6

The win improved Canada's record to 4-2, while Mexico fell to 3-3. Team Canada, who finished third place in Pool B, will play its first playoff game at 1:00pm EST on Thursday when they will take on Denmark (2-4), who finished fourth in Pool A. Argentina (6-0) and Japan (5-1) secured the top two spots in Pool B to earn double-life in the playoff round and they will face Australia (5-0) and the United States (5-0), who are currently playing for first place in Pool A. Mexico (fourth in Pool B) will cross over to play New Zealand (third in Pool A).
